Women’s Soccer falls short in Joplin

Jets out shot the Tigers in 1-0 loss

JOPLIN, Mo.- The Jets traveled to their final away game of the season against Missouri Southern. The last time out, the Jets hosted Northeastern State and fell short at 2-0. This time out, the Jets dropped the match 1-0 to the Lions.

How it Happened:
- In the first three minutes of play, Maylani Birckbichler had two shots. Both shots were on target for Birckbichler, but both were saved by Bella Smith of Missouri Southern. From then on, the match was back and forth. In the 16th minute, the Lions were able to find the back of the net from a goal by Jilliana Reese to take the lead at 1-0. In the 19th minute, Birckbichler had another chance on goal but again was denied by the Lions goalie. Morgan Todd was the next Jet with a shot, in the 30th minute, but couldn't put the ball on frame. In the 41st minute, Lexi Bauer had a good look to put the Jets on the board before half, but another Lions save kept the game at 1-0. The Jets went into halftime down 1-0. In the first half, Newman out shot the Lions 5-3 with four of those shots on goal. Birckbichler had three of the Jets five shots and all three of those shots were on goal. 
- In the second half, Birckbichler had the first shot for the Jets in the 48th minute but missed wide right. Delphine Sosu had a chance on goal in the 54th minute, but the Lions goalie made yet another save to keep the Jets off the board. Sosu had strong looks in the 57th and 59th minute, but Bella Smith saved both shots for her 7th save of the game. In the 64th minute, Smith kept the Jets off the board again after saving Sosu's shot. In the 67th minute the Lions were able to put a shot on goal but Carla Apodaca was able to save the ball to keep the Lions at just one goal. Another shot for the Lions came in the 68th minute, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. The Lions recorded another shot in the 73rd minute but Apodaca was able to make the save to keep the deficit at only one. Southern had another look on goal with a shot by Preslee Zeigler but Apodaca was there again for the save. The single goal for the Lions in the first half was enough to overtake the Jets. 
- Newman fell to the Lions, 1-0.

- Sosu added four shots, four on goal.
- Birckbichler added four shots with three on goal. 

The Jets return home on Wednesday to close their 2024 campaign against Central Oklahoma at 6 PM.
