Volleyball drops four set contest to Lions

Arkansas-Fort Smith plays in Fugate Gymnasium for first time

 WICHITA- The Jets hosted the Lions for the first time in Fugate Gymnasium. The last time against Fort Smith, the Jets fell in three sets. This time out, the Jets dropped the match up 4-1.

How it Happened:
- The first set was an extra points battle. Newman was able to take the early lead at 10-5. The Lions made a quick run to make the game 11-8 which forced the Jets to take their first timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Lions scored the first point but the Jets then took the next two off of Lions errors to make the game 13-9. The Lions made a quick two points back to cut the deficit to 13-11. A kill by Hannah Tymitz started a Jets run, after her kill the Jets found themselves up at 16-13. The Lions wouldn't go away, making a run back at the Jets to make it 16-14 still in favor of the Jets. The Jets found themselves with a lead at 21-17 after a Lions error. Killsl by Makenna Reinert and Natalie Meyer took that lead to 23-17. The Lions were then able to put together a six point run to tie it at 23 all. A service error by Fort Smith gave the Jets the set point at 24-23. Fort Smith then tied it at 24 all again after a kill. A kill by Madalyn Hoot gave the Jets their second set point at 25-24. A great play at the net by Silvia Fisher to tip the ball back into the Lions court won the set for the Jets. The Jets took set one, 26-24. In the first set, Ozioma Ajekwu led the Jets with five kills on 11 total attacks. 
- In the second set, Fort Smith took the early lead at 9-3. A kill by Ajekwu stopped the Lions run. Errors by the Jets allowed the Lions to extend their lead to 12-5 and forced the Jets to take a timeout. A kill by McKenna Rhodes stopped the Lions run to make it a 13-6 game. The Bulldogs then struck back with another run to extend their lead to 19-10. After this run, the game was out of reach for the Jets. Newman fell in the second set, 25-13. 
- The Lions were first to the board in the third set. A massive kill by Natalie Meyer put the Jets on the board to start the set. The Jets took the lead at 3-2 after a Fisher kill. Fort Smith retook the lead at 5-4. The Lions then extended their game to 13-5 which forced the Jets to take their first timeout of the third set. After the timeout, the Jets cut the deficit after a kill by Meyer and an attacking error by the Lions to make it a 14-9 game. This run by the Jets forced Fort Smith to take their first timeout of the set. After the Lions timeout, they pieced together a run to lead at 18-12. An Ajekwu kill stopped the Lions run and started the Jets comeback. Kills by Rhodes and Meyer cut it to a three point game at 19-16 which forced the Lions to take their second timeout. The Lions were able to finish it out after the timeout and take set three, 25-18. 
- Set four was a back and forth battle. Kills by Ajekwu and Camdyn Kindred put the Jets on top at 13-10 after a small 3-0 run. This forced the Lions to take their first timeout of the set. Tymitz extended the lead at 14-10. The Jets kept pushing their lead, after a service ace by Kindred, Newman was on top at 17-11. This six point deficit caused the Lions to take their second timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Jets kept the pressure on the Lions and took the lead at 20-11 before the Lions finally stopped the Newman run. The Lions were able to then put a run together to cut the deficit to just three at 20-17. This run caused Newman to take a timeout. After the Jets timeout, UAFS retook the lead at 22-21. The Jets were able to tie it back at 22 all after a Lions error. The Jets and Lions eventually tied again at 24. At the 24 all mark, Meyer recorded a kill to make the Jets have a set point at 25-24. A missed serve by the Jets allowed Fort Smith to tie the game again at 25 all. The Lions found themselves at set point at 26-25. An attacking error by the Jets ended the set. The Lions took set four, 27-25. 

Player Notes:
- Ajekwu tallied 14 kills to lead the Jets offense. 
- Meyer added ten kills. 
- Natalie Trigo recorded 16 digs. 
 
The Jets are back at Fugate Gymnasium tomorrow against Central Oklahoma at 6 PM and will celebrate Senior Day.
