Jets defeat Riverhawks in MIAA opener

Men’s Basketball downs NSU on the road, 85-66

TAHLEQUAH, Okla.- The Jets took on the Riverhawks on the road to open up conference play. Against Northeastern State, the Jets dominated with an 85-66 win.

How it Happened:
-The Jets and Riverhawks started the game trading off baskets after the Jets went on a 4-0 run to start. Buckets by Isaiah Elmore and Sam Somerhalder allowed the Jets early lead, but the Riverhawks answered with points of their own to tie the game at eight all at the first media timeout of the first half. The Jets were able to start putting together a run with baskets by Aaron Murphy and Sam Somerhalder to make the game 17-13 with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. The Jets continued their run with free throws by Deadric Fikes and a three pointer by Thatcher McClure, to build a nine point lead. The Jets defense was able to hold off the Riverhawks on the offensive end for six minutes, allowing the Jets to hold steady with the lead at 27-15 with five minutes left to play. The Riverhawks then put together a run that allowed NSU to close the deficit to just six points. Heading into the final media timeout of the half, the Jets had the lead at 31-24. After the timeout, Devin Walker found his first points of the day off a fast break layup. The next Jets score was a converted and one by Jordan Glenn-Hawkins, which gave the Jets a double digit lead at 36-26. With 1:31 left to play. Somerhalder hit a turnaround jumper to take the lead up to 13 points. The Riverhawks found one last surge before the break, cutting the game to just eight points. Heading into halftime, the Jets had the lead at 42-34. Somerhalder led the offense with eight points, going 4-5 from the field. Glenn-Hawkins and Stanton III scored seven points a piece in the half. 
-In the second half, Newman started off hot with Glenn-Hawkins scoring six of the first eight points for the Jets in the first two minutes of play. This short run by the Jets forced the Riverhawks to take a quick timeout with under 18 minutes left to play. After the timeout, Elmore made a massive block which led to a Sam Medalie three to take a 16 point lead. The Riverhawks then answered with back to back threes to make it an 11 point ball game. A technical foul sent Stanton III to the line where he connected with both. The Riverhawks continued to try to stay in the game, but the Jets were able to keep battling them back. Glenn-Hawkins scored his 15th point on the night to extend the lead to 15 with under 14 minutes to play. Trey Phipps continued to propel the Riverhawks offense, scoring his 20th point on the night to cut the Jets lead to 12 at 64-52. Fikes answered back his 10th point to take it back to 14 heading into the media break. After the media break, Elmore scored five points to get the Jets the 20 point lead with 7:30 left to play. The Riverhawks tried to put together a run to cut into the lead, but could never quite get within reach. The Jets closed out the game with free throws and took the win, 85-66. 

Player Notes:
- Glenn-Hawkins led the way with 17 points.
- Elmore scored 8 points, 4 blocks, 5 assists, and 12 boards.
- Somerhalder, Stanton III, Murphy, and Fikes all added double-digit points.

The Jets are back on Saturday and will take on Arkansas Fort Smith on the road.
