Opening Day showcases offenses, Crimson Storm escapes Jets on day one

Three Jets homer, Arnold narrowly misses cycle bid in NU debut

BETHANY, Okla. – Newman Baseball opened their season against Southern Nazarene on Thursday afternoon with a double-header versus the Crimson Storm.

The schedule was originally set to play only one game on Thursday, but with inclement weather expected in Oklahoma this weekend, the series was adjusted to allow two days of double-headers.

Game 1

The Crimson Storm took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after keeping the Jets offense quiet to start the game. That would change quickly as catcher Garrett Arnold got his first home run in a Newman uniform in his first at bat.

Arnold would continue to have a great debut for the navy and red, as he would go on to get four more hits and go perfect from the plate, going five of five and falling just a triple shy of a cycle.

Shawn Marquis got his first of two RBI's to get the next Newman run across, bringing Jack Kiser home.

Arnold and Kiser would each get a double in the third to give Newman their first lead with the score at 4-3.

SNU got a home run of their own to tie the game and would eventually take a two run lead in the fifth.

Trent Trammel, who appeared in only two games for the Jets last season, got the Jets back on the board with a double RBI as Jason Schneider scored to put Newman down by one.

An error in the seventh allowed Arnold to score to tie the game at six runs apiece.

Following a scoreless eighth, the Crimson Storm scored three runs to take a firm advantage of the game. Although the Jets got one run back, Southern Nazarene closed out the opening day win.

Cole Landgraf pitched six complete innings, striking out eight batters. In the sixth inning, he struck out the side Crimson Storm batters to keep the game tied at six. Jaret Granger was given the loss in the game, striking out three in two innings of work.

Game 2

SNU struck first in the second game of the doubleheader, forcing NU to play from behind. That was short lived, however, as a two run homer from Blake Mitchell tied the game at two.

The home bats were not kind to the Jets as SNU took an eight run lead in the third.

An Eli Wohl single brought three runners home in the fourth to chip away at the Crimson Storm lead.

The Jets' best inning of the second game came in the fifth, as Newman nearly leveled the score to just a two run advantage for SNU. Will Bomberbach had the Jets' second two run home run of the game in the inning as NU continued to fire on all cylinders. Nick Chasey tallied an RBI single, followed by Blake Mitchell scoring on an error. The five run fifth was capped off by a sacrifice hit from Shawn Marquis, scoring Chasey.

Leading by two, SNU padded its lead with a pair of RBI singles in the sixth.
The Jets were able to score a run in the top of the seventh as Eli Wohl hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Cullen Glosson home. SNU went on to take the seven inning second game by a final score of 14-11.

Friday's doubleheader wraps up the season opening series in Bethany, Oklahoma. The Jets will look to be on the other side of offensive outbursts at 11 AM and 2 PM.
