DURANT, Okla. - Newman Baseball wrapped up their first weekend series of the season against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, with the Jets losing two high scoring contests.
The Savage Storm had defeated Newman yesterday and shut down any semblance of a Jets offense. The Jets responded with two high scoring contests, including scoring ten runs in the first game of the day.
Game 1
After it looked like the Jets might be in a repeat of yesterday after going down two runs and leaving more runners on base, the Jets took a large advantage in the fifth inning.
Capped off with a
Dalton Smith three run blast, the Jets took a commanding 5-2 lead. In the inning, the Jets had five runs off of four hits, and capitalized on several errors, including a
Shawn Marquis run that was scored off of an error at first base.
With the Savage Storm bringing it to within one run, Newman retook a firm advantage with a two run inning.
Several scoreless innings followed after the explosive start to the game other than one run from Southeastern Oklahoma.
Smith continued to hit well late into the game, as he hit a double that brought two runs home, giving Newman an 11-8 advantage with just a few innings to go.
It took the Savage Storm until the bottom of the ninth to get the lead again, as they would win on a walk off single to beat the Jets, 11-10.
Game 2
With the aggravating loss clearly in their minds, the Jets started off the second game swinging, with the first three batters getting a hit. Newcomer
Garrett Arnold continued the strong start to his season with a triple, that scored two runs.
Tying it up in the third inning, it seemed that Southeastern Oklahoma had a response to every setback they faced against the Navy and Red.
Another
Eli Wohl home run gave the Jets a brief 4-3 lead, but the Savage Storm once again leveled matters.
An Arnold single brought Wohl home in the fifth to once again give Newman a one run lead, but with the Savage Storm scoring six straight runs without a Newman response, the game was settled late once again.
The Jets will have one final road game against Southwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday, and will finally open the home streatch against Concordia St. Paul for a weekend series starting next Friday.
