Jets get off to quick start, but can't get past Golden Bears

Brown hits second home run of season

WICHITA - Newman Baseball opened at home for the first time this season, hosting Concordia St. Paul for the Jets first weekend series in Wichita.

Coming off a tough road trip through Oklahoma to open the year, the Jets were looking to turn things around at home, where Newman won 16 games last season.

The Golden Bears couldn't have asked for a better start with four runs in the first inning, with all four of the runs coming off doubles.

Newman had their own say in the bottom of the 1st inning, as the Jets scored three runs.

Trent Trammell, who has had a very good start at the plate for Newman to open the season, singled at his first at bat, which brought Garrett Arnold and Jason Schneider home. Trammel would score himself later in the inning, after a Joe Kinneberg single to center field led to an error, which allowed the first baseman to score.

A five run inning in the second gave Concordia a bigger lead and would score more than one run in every inning except for when the Jets shut them down in the fifth.

The Jets would have a bright spot in the sixth, when Hunter Brown hit his second home run of the season.

The Jets saw four pitchers in action through seven innings, with the Jets finding trouble with consistency against the Golden Bears.

Cole Landgraf was marked with the loss, striking out two with 1.2 innings played. Brycen Schoenhofer, who came in as a reliever, had the best day on the mound for Newman, allowing four hits and striking out three.

After the fast start, Newman's hitting wouldn't reach the same highs that the team had been used to this season. Garrett Arnold would have the best day out of Newman's batters, getting two hits off three at bats and scoring one run.

Newman will have a chance to get in the win column again on Sunday, taking on the Golden Bears at 2 PM.
