WICHITA - Newman Baseball had an impressive scoring day against Concordia St. Paul on Saturday, with the Jets scoring 17 runs in the game. Despite the Jets high scoring, it would not be enough to take down the Golden Bears.
The Golden Bears had taken the first game on Saturday and grounded much of Newman's offense. Sunday would be a different story, as Newman hit well through the entire game.
The Jets were the first team to get on the board, as Jason Schneider scored his first of two solo shot home runs. Schneider had quite the outing, as he went perfect from the plate going three of three, scoring three runs and notching four RBIs.
Despite the bright start, the Golden Bears scored two home runs of their own and scored five runs before Newman could respond.
Schneider's second solo home run put Newman back on the board, but it was in the fifth inning that the Jets truly showed their offensive might.
Starting with a Blake Mitchell 2 RBI home run, the Jets looked like they couldn't be stopped as they retook the lead from Concordia St. Paul. Singles from Wohl and Schneider each brought a runner home, while a Trent Trammell double let Schneider score the Jets seventh run of the day to give the 7-5 lead.
The Golden Bears again took the lead away from Newman in the sixth, but it was the Jets who continued to respond to the deficits they faced. Three runs in the sixth tied the game at ten.
Things started to fall apart for Newman as CSP took a ten run advantage and looked to end the game early.
Three doubles from pinch hitters Will Bomersbach and Matthew Revels and first basemen Trammell gave the Jets a much needed boost as they forced the game to continue after Newman had scored five runs in the eighth.
The Jets would get several more runs in the ninth to give them an incredible 17 run day, but still feel short of their first home win as the Golden Bears won, 24-17.
The Jets had a total of 19 hits in the game, out hitting the Golden Bears despite the score.
Schneider finished with four RBI's, as nine other Jets had at least one. Trent Trammell would have three himself to end the day.
The Jets will finish off the series with the Golden Bears on Monday, and will then head to Southwestern College for a midweek game on Tuesday.
