Late Rogers State surge downs Newman in series finale

Jets lead for five innings before Hillcats comeback

WICHITA - Newman Baseball wrapped up their first MIAA series of the season on Sunday, taking a sizable lead against Rogers State in the early innings before the Hillcats mounted a comeback to take the series finale.

The Jets got off to a red-hot start in the first inning. Trent Trammell hit this second triple of the season, which led to Garrett Arnold scoring the first run of the game. A Joe Kinneberg double in the next at bat gave Newman another run.

Following an error by the pitcher in the second inning, short stop Nick Chasey scored while Shawn Marquis advanced all the way to third in what could have been a crucial out for the Hillcats.

A Jase Schneider double gave the Jets a 6-0 after just two innings, while pitcher Connor Rowe shut them out for the first three innings.

A big fifth inning got Rogers State back into the game, but two runs in the bottom of the inning gave the Jets some breathing room.

The sixth inning saw a huge momentum shift, as the Jets could not get an out for a long period of time. Seven runs in the inning meant that they had scored nearly as many runs the Jets had in the entire game.

A Will Bomersbach home run gave the Jets some life in the ninth inning, but his brilliant hit would be the only other run the Jets would get in the game, losing 13-10 after holding a 6-0 lead after just two innings.

Joe Kinneberg and Jason Schneider combined for five hits and four RBI's, with their early offense giving Newman momentum.

The Jets will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State for a midweek clash at 2 PM.
