WICHITA - Newman Baseball had one of their best games of the season against Southeastern Oklahoma State, excelling on offense and in the outfield. A route ensued from the beginning, with the Jets scoring a majority of their runs in the first few innings.
After some up and down starts for Newman the past few weeks, they certainly led off on the right track as four runs would be scored in the first inning.
In particular fashion,
Trent Trammell started the game with a huge hit that scored the first runs of the day. Trammell, who was the Jets leader in batting average, had a big day and helped to propel the Jets to more runs throughout the game.
Big hits from
Jason Schneider and
Will Bomersbach scored another two runs in the inning, as the Savage Storm were stunned at the fast pace of the Newman offense.
Scoring off a wild pitch, Schneider gave the Jets a 4-0 lead.
The Savage Storm might have gotten a run back in the second inning, but another four run inning from Newman almost put Southeastern Oklahoma State out of the game early.
Capped off with a Bomersbach 2 RBI home run, the Jets were cruising to a big day at McCarthy Field.
The Jets could not be stopped against any of the five Savage Storm pitchers who entered the game, as they allowed thirteen runs and eleven hits.
There were even more problems with the outfield for the visitors, as a throwing error by the short stop allowed
Shawn Marquis and
Blake Mitchell to score the deciding runs of the game.
The Jets saw some of their best pitching of the season today as well. Starter
Garrett Calderon allowed just one run through three innings of work.
Aiden Rea, who was making his collegiate debut, earned his first win of the season and like Calderon, allowed just one run in three innings.
Lance Elsen saw the game out in the seventh, striking out one of the final batters with two runners in scoring position.
With the 13-3 win, the Jets earn their first home win of the season. They will be back in action against Missouri Southern for a three game series in Joplin beginning Friday.
