JOPLIN, Mo. - Newman Baseball went on the road for the first time in conference on Friday, playing #8 Missouri Southern in the first of a three-game series.
Last season, Newman played the Lions in the Jets first ever MIAA Tournament appearance, taking the Lions to the limit through three games. The Jets claimed a victory in the second game of the postseason series before being defeated in the third game.
It was a tough start in Joplin, as the Jets could not get a hit in the early innings, with their batters retired early from several strikeouts.
The Lions took advantage of this slow Newman start, and took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Nick Chasey got the Jets their first hit of the day with a double into center field, but was left on base at the end of the inning.
The Lions had a four run inning in the bottom of the third, showing their might as the number eight ranked team in the land.
A crucial fourth inning followed. Trent Trammell, Joe Kinneberg and Cullen Glosson were all walked to have the bases loaded with two outs. Unfortunately, the Jets struck out and could have used a huge momentum swing to get them back in the game.
The Lions had a similar situation with bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, but a great catch from Eli Wohl prevented any of the Lions from scoring.
The Lions again got the bases loaded for yet another inning in the fifth, and this time they would capitalize on the situation. Three scoring runs were from walks and another was from a wild pitch.
The Jets just couldn't get any offensive traction, with Chasey's hit being the lone hit of the day for Newman.
Newman Baseball will be back in action tomorrow, facing the Lions in the second game of the series at 1 p.m.
