Baseball edged out by Lions in game two

Jets strike last in back and forth game, but MSSU emerged victorious

JOPLIN, Mo. - Newman and Missouri Southern play the second game of a three game weekend set at Warren Turner Field on Saturday afternoon. Each team held multiple leads as runs were scored by at least one team in seven of the nine innings.

The scoring kicked off with an MSSU RBI double in the bottom of the first. In the third, Newman got on the board with a bases loaded hit by pitch. Kinneberg tallied an RBI after wearing one in the right handed batters box, scoring Blake Mitchell. Mitchell scored his first of two runs on a day in which the junior slugged three hits, including a triple. Jase Schneider gave the Jets their first lead as a fielder's choice brought home Shawn Marquis.

It did not take long for the Lions to respond as Henry Kusiak went deep, evening the game at two runs apiece. Kusiak was involved on the earlier double as a run scorer. The Lion shortstop has scored six runs in total through two games this weekend.

Jase Schneider picked up his second RBI in the fifth inning, scoring Joe Kinneberg on an RBI groundout. The home team squared the game up at three in the home half with sacrifice fly. Newman would regain their lead the next inning with a Blake Mitchell lead off triple and Sean Marquis ground out to the shortstop.

In the bottom of the sixth, MSSU tallied their lone crooked number in the box score as three runs came across the plate, giving the Lions a 6-4 lead.

A Will Bomersbach solo shot in the seventh cut the lead in half. MSSU's Doherty added an insurance run in the eighth, putting the Jets behind by a pair again.

Joe Kinneberg took the Missouri Southern closer yard to open the final frame, but the homer for the Lions in the eighth was just enough insurance to secure the game two win for the home team.

Colby Wilson went 5.2 innings on the mound to start for Newman. The junior struck out just one batter, allowing six runs on eight hits. Wilson was tagged with the loss. Jaret Granger relieved Wilson in the middle of the sixth inning. His appearance has been a welcome sight for the pitching staff as the senior returned to the bullpen with two appearances in the last seven days, totaling 3.1 innings and allowing just two hits, one walk and one run. Over his 2.1 innings Saturday in Joplin, the Arlington, Texas native struck out two batters.

Newman returns to the field on Sunday against Missouri Southern for a third and final game with the Lions. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.
