Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball gets off to good start; outdone by errors in second half

Murphy finishes with 18 points in loss

WICHITA - Newman got off to a quick start against Pittsburg State on Saturday, but errors at the end of the first half and in the second half prevented them getting their first conference win in over a month.

The last time the two met in December, both teams put on incredible offenses that was decided by who could shoot at a higher rate, which turned out to be Pittsburg State in a 82-66 win for the Gorillas.

The Jets started on a quick 6-2 run to open the game, with Triston Turner assisting and getting several steals in the process to open the run.

Newman was moving the ball well, with four different scorers getting on the score sheets in the first five minutes of the game.

The Gorillas tied the game up several times, only to have the Jets retake the lead.

Despite the promising opening, Newman went cold for a stretch that allowed the Gorillas to take a firm advantage.

In the last two minutes of the half, the Gorillas went on a 9-0 without allowing a single point as they took a 21 point advantage to the half.

The Jets once again opened the half on an excellent run, forcing a Pittsburg State timeout just a minute into the half.

Latik Murphy went on a 10-0 all by himself in the half as well, but the Gorillas kept shooting the ball well and forced multiple Jet turnovers.

A 77-60 victory for the Gorillas reflected how well they were able to maintain the lead.

Latik Murphy's second half run propelled him to an 18 point day, shooting nearly 50% from the field.

The Jets will have one final roadtrip next weekend, as they will take on Fort Hays State on Thursday before heading to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday.
