Baseball goes back and forth with RiverHawks; comeback falls short in ninth

Arnold and Marquis combine for 4 RBIs

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Newman Baseball looked to grab their first conference win of the season on Friday, battling through a tough game against Northeastern State. The RiverHawks had a two run lead in the ninth, and although the Jets had the bases loaded at the very end, could not find a tying run to extend the game.

After a frustrating game against Fort Hays State earlier in the week, the Jets were hoping to get back to winning ways.

Both teams had batters strike out early, and it would not be until Trent Trammell hit a single in the second that the game saw it's first hit from either team. The Jets had two runners on base in the second, but were caught stealing at third base to retire the sides.

Garrett Arnold's double scored the first two runs of the day, scoring Joe Kinneberg and Eli Wohl in the third.

The RiverHawks would score their first run off of an error, but thanks to Jets pitcher Lance Elsen, would not have a single hit in the first three innings.

Elsen had a productive afternoon, striking out four and giving up only one run, which was ruled unearned.

A home run and another error gave the RiverHawks a two run swing in the fourth, giving them their first lead of the day at 4-2.

The Jets found a way to get back into the game however. A Shawn Marquis single scored two runs and tied the game at four a piece.

Newman made another error in the seventh, allowing a NSU runner to score. It gave the RiverHawks a 5-4 lead going into the final two innings. One more run would score for the home team before Newman could respond.

With the bases loaded, Jack Kiser was walked and scored a late run with two outs on the board. unfortunately even with the bases loaded again, the RiverHawks struck out the final Newman batter.

Arnold and Marquis had a combined four RBIs to their names, as theirs came in crucial moments to either take the lead or tie the game.

The Jets will have another chance at their first conference win tomorrow, as they will take on NSU again at 3 pm.
