Game Recap: Baseball |

Jets score three runs to open game but are unable to get past RiverHawks

Kinneberg homers in first inning

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Newman Baseball had an impressive opening in their second game against Northeastern State this weekend, but their offense slowly fizzled out as the game went on.

The Jets had nearly comeback and defeated the RiverHawks yesterday, but fell just short in the ninth inning after not being able to take advantage with the bases loaded.

At just the second at bat of the afternoon, Joe Kinneberg nailed his second home run of the season, giving Newman a start they had hoped for after the first game.

With NSU scoring three in the bottom of the inning, Newman would have to make another comeback attempt to get back in the lead.

Shawn Marquis had the first of two RBIs in the second inning, with his single leading to an error from the Northeastern State left fielder, scoring both Hunter Brown and Nick Chasey. The runs tied the game at 3-3.

Another big inning from NSU put them up by five runs, but it did not come without a Newman response.

A Chasey single scored Jack Kiser in the third, but after that hit runs would be hard to come by for Newman.

Marquis did get his second RBI in the sixth inning, but by that point the game had almost gone out of the grasp of the Jets. Northeastern State would go on to win, 15-5.

Newman will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m., and will then be off until the following Friday, when they will take on Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Missouri.
