Jets incredible rally not enough in series finale

Newman scores eight runs, Riverhawks narrowly escape

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Newman Baseball wrapped up their series against Northeastern State on Sunday, falling behind early and rallying late to tie the game in the eighth inning. Despite some incredible efforts on the Jets part, Northeastern State was able to escape with another close victory.

Pitcher Colby Wilson started the game striking out the first two at bats, and was on this way to a third if not for two consecutive batters getting hit by pitch. With bases loaded, the RiverHawks hit a single to right field that scored two runs.

The first five innings would be incredibly hard for Newman, who after the fifth found themselves down by eight runs.

The Jets first sign of life came in the fifth. Hunter Brown would reach first on an error by the NSU short stop, which in turn would allow Jack Kiser to score Newman's first run of the game.

Garret Arnold hit a double shortly after to score two more, while Eli Wohl would get Newman's fourth coming off a Joe Kinneberg single.

The rally was truly on in the seventh, as Newman would score four more runs to tie the game at eight runs a piece.

Jacob Butash had a double that scored two in the inning, while he would later score himself to bring the game back to a tie game.

Newman was unable to take the lead, and despite their great effort through two innings to bring the game level, would give up three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The runs would turn out to be the deciding factor as the RiverHawks won, 11-8.

Arnold's two hits would bring him three RBIs in the sixth and seventh innings, as he was the main threat for the Jets at the plate.

Wilson and Jaret Granger each had three strikeouts in three innings of work.

The Jets will return to the field on Friday, when they will take on Missouri Western in St. Joseph at 4 p.m.
