Jets vs Mythical Creatures
Jets Baseball continues their stint away from Wichita with another three game series on the road, taking on Missouri Western.
Â
Schedule Update
This weekend's series has been adjusted due to inclement weather in Missouri expected for later this weekend. The series will now begin Thursday and conclude on Saturday.
Â
Last Time Out
Newman Baseball wrapped up their series against Northeastern State on Sunday, falling behind early and rallying late to tie the game in the eighth inning. Despite some incredible efforts on the Jets part, Northeastern State was able to escape with another close victory.Â
PitcherÂ
Colby Wilson started the game striking out the first two at bats, and was on this way to a third if not for two consecutive batters getting hit by pitch. With bases loaded, the RiverHawks hit a single to right field that scored two runs.Â
The Jets first sign of life came in the fifth.Â
Hunter Brown would reach first on an error by the NSU short stop, which in turn would allowÂ
Jack Kiser to score Newman's first run of the game.Â
Garret Arnold hit a double shortly after to score two more, whileÂ
Eli Wohl would get Newman's fourth coming off aÂ
Joe Kinneberg single.Â
The rally was truly on in the seventh, as Newman would score four more runs to tie the game at eight runs apiece.
Newman was unable to take the lead, and despite their great effort through two innings to bring the game level, would give up three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The runs would turn out to be the deciding factor as the RiverHawks won, 11-8. Â
Box Score
Â
At The Plate
Garrett Arnold had quite the weekend down in Tahlequah, as his impressive debut season for Newman continued to hit new heights.
Arnold became the first Jet this season to reach twenty RBIs, with three of them coming in the series finale against the RiverHawks.
Joe Kinneberg still leads the way for Newman batters in the lineup, averaging .362 so far this season.
The Enemy Dugout
Having almost reached their win total from last season, Missouri Western is coming off three straight series losses to open up the MIAA slate.
This past weekend, they were thumped handily by Northwest Missouri State in the first two games, but picked up a win in a high scoring game.
The Griffons have not played well at home this season, winning just five thus far. Their last win was nearly a month ago in a win over Northeastern State.
The Griffons Ryan Koval has been deadly at the plate this season. Averaging nearly .400 and closing in on forty hits and twenty RBIs, the outfielder has started in all twenty three games for Missouri Western this year.
The Series (All Time)
The series between the two clubs is tied at 5-5. Newman won the series 2-1 last season in Wichita, with both of the wins coming by the run rule.
Interestingly, this will be the first time that Newman will have played in St. Joseph. The two teams have only played each other in Wichita or at a neutral site. The Jets were supposed to have played the Griffons at their home in 2022, but after a winter storm the series was moved to Wichita at the eleventh hour.
The Tuesday Midweek
The Jets will face off against Fort Hays State for the second time this season on Tuesday. It will be the second of three games between the two, and the only one to take place in Hays this year.
The Tigers took care of business against the Jets last week, but have gone on a three-game losing streak since then.
What's Next?
The Navy and Red will host Central Missouri just before Easter Sunday next week. The series will begin next Thursday and conclude on Saturday.
