Griffons early lead too strong to overcome for Jets

Owens finishes with two RBIs

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Newman Baseball continued their high scoring series with the Missouri Western Griffons on Saturday, losing a tight contest that was decided in the ninth inning.

The Jets had defeated Missouri Western on Thursday for their first road conference win of the year in a 6-5 victory. It was Newman who was able to hold off the Griffons late despite two late runs, but on Friday the roles were reversed.

Breaking into the lineup for the first time yesterday, Connor Owens had one of his first hits of the season in the first inning, scoring Eli Wohl for his second RBI of the season.

The bottom of the inning saw the momentum change quickly. The Griffons scored six runs in the inning, with five of them occurring while the bases were loaded. A grand slam gave the Griffons a 6-1 lead, one that they would not lose the rest of the way.

The Jets scored on a walk with the bases loaded in the second, and would continue to put the pressure on Missouri Western in the fourth.

Hunter Brown would score his first run of the day off a wild pitch, while Owens once again bringing home Wohl for his second RBI of the game.

The Griffons took a four run advantage going into the ninth, but the fight from Newman was still going strong.

A Jack Kiser single scored Joe Kinneberg with no outs in the inning, and after a Garrett Arnold 2 RBI double, the Griffons held just a one run lead with only one out.

Arnold would get into a great position to score the tying run, advancing to third on a wild pitch. However, the Griffons would hold on to get a tight 8-7 win in the second game of the series.

Owens finished the day with three hits and two RBIs, while Black Mitchell, Kiser and Brown had two.

Brycen Schoenhofer played in the final two innings as a reliever, allowing just one hit to help keep Newman in the game.

The Series will conclude tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
