MARYVILLE, Mo. - Baseball won their fourth game in a row, and their sixth out of the last seven, to sweep the Northwest Missouri Bearcats. It's Newman's first sweep of an MIAA opponent since joining the conference in COVID shortened 2020 season. The game was very close up until the eighth inning when Newman scored eight unanswered runs to finish the game.
On Saturday, the Jets won a very close and exciting 12-11 game with the eighth inning also deciding the winner of the game.
Connor Owens had an outstanding performance hitting four for six and assisting the team with two RBIs.
Newman took an early lead in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs off of a double to right field from
Hunter Brown.
The Bearcats answered with a solo home run to left center field but were unable to tie the game in the bottom of second.
After securing three outs, the Jets got back on offensive duties. A sacrifice fly out to right field from
Blake Mitchell scored
Connor Owens to increase their lead by one. A single to right field from
Nick Chasey scored
Joe Kinneberg to add another Jet run. Finally,
Hunter Brown singled to shortstop to score
Trent Trammell and add a third run before going back to defense.
Northwest Missouri answered to the three runs with their own three runs to keep the pressure on Newman.
The Jets were not able to score any more runs in the four following innings despite being able to put six runners on base.
The Bearcats seized their opportunity and claimed the lead back after scoring a total of three runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth.
With the game and the hopes for a post season spot on the line, the Jets stepped up their offensive game in the best possible moment. A single from
Trent Trammell, a home run to left field from
Blake Mitchell, and a home run to right field from
Connor Owens saw the Jets score an impressive eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to retake the lead.
Garrett Calderon claimed the win for the Jets after 3.1 innings pitched. Calderon only allowed one hit and four runs, and added a strikeout to wrap up his strong performance. With this win, Calderon moves to 2-2 in the season.
Newman moves to 9-18 in conference play and joins the four way tie for the desired eighth spot.
The Jets will host their last non-conference game of the season on Tuesday April 16th with a game at 3:00 PM before focusing on their last home conference series.
