Jets lose steam in series opener with Gorillas

Newman scores three runs off four hits in second inning

WICHITA - Newman Baseball began their last home series of the season against Pittsburg State on Friday, grabbing an early lead and losing it to the Gorillas. The Jets scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Despite only putting up a few runs, the Jets hit the ball well but just couldn't find the sweet spot to bring more base runners home.

Last weekend, the Jets secured a huge sweep over Northwest Missouri State on the road. The win meant that the Jets were ina four way tie entering today's game.

Despite giving up an early run in the first, Lance Elsen was able to strike out two in his first of three plus innings in the game. He would add one more strikeout later in the game to give him three strikeouts in the game.

After being held to no hits in the first, the Jets had their best inning of the afternoon in the second. Scoring three runs off of four hits, the Jets took a 3-1 lead over PSU.

Trent Trammell and Hunter Brown each got on base by a single, while a Shawn Marquis two RBI double brought home the first two runs of the day for Newman. This was quickly followed up with another single, this time coming from Eli Wohl. The third single of the inning would score Marquis, giving the Jets some confidence going into a crucial series of the season.

From here, the Gorillas took a firm advantage they would hold to the end of the game. A home run in the fourth gave the Gorillas a 4-3 lead, one they would continue to extend.

The Gorillas scored off of five straight hits in the fifth, with the lead growing to 10-3.

A few unfortunate errors late in the game cost the Jets several more runs, as the Gorillas took the first game of the series, 13-3.

The result still keeps Newman at a tie for the eight seed this afternoon, with Northwest Missouri State also losing. A crucial game between Emporia State and Fort Hays State could change the landscape of the standings, as there could be a five way tie for the eight seed after tonight.

Newman will hope to get back on level terms in the series tomorrow, with game two scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
