WICHITA - Newman Baseball lost a close contest to Pittsburg State in the second game of the final home series at McCarthy this season, having to try and dig themselves out of a hole after taking an early lead.
The Gorillas had won the first game in dominant fashion, not allowing any Newman runs after the second inning and going on to win 13-3. This series is crucial to Newman's postseason aspirations, with now only four games left to decide Newman's fate.
While the Gorillas took an early lead off a home run in the first inning, the Jets would have one of their more unusual and incredible plays this season in the bottom of the inning.
Off a
Trent Trammell single that lead to an error in right field, all three runners on base scored and incredibly, Trammell did as well. Trammell kept the afterburners on after the error was committed and made it home just in time before the ball reached the catcher at home plate.
Trammell would go on to have a perfect day at the plate, getting three more hits throughout the game.
Several errors undid some of the good work the Jets had done to start the game, and eventually the Gorillas took a go ahead grand slam to give the visitors a 7-4 lead.
Trammell was again able to show his speed in the fourth after he got on base, as he was able to go all the way from first to home off a
Hunter Brown single.
A Garret Arnold sacrifice fly was able to score two more runs, as the Jets had some momentum going into the ninth inning. However, the Gorillas were able to see a much closer game out, winning 10-8.
Connor Rowe was able to strike out four in six innings of work, throwing over one hundred pitches.
Trammell accounted for half of Newman's hits, as the Jets seemed to struggle at times getting on base, even with a close score through most of the afternoon.
The game moved Newman down a spot in the MIAA standings, but they still have a path to make their second postseason appearance. With only four games left in the season, it is now do or die for Newman Baseball.
Before tomorrow's game, thirteen seniors will be celebrated for their careers and dedication to Newman Baseball. The ceremony will begin at 12:30, with the series finale scheduled for 1 p.m.
