WICHITA - Newman Baseball picked up their second series win in the MIAA this season, defeating Washburn in yet another high scoring game. On Friday, it was Washburn who scored more runs in the games early stages, but today it was the Jets.
The game had been moved up to the late morning due to high powered winds in the Wichita area expected later in the day. Despite this, the Jets had no problems letting their hits fly against the Ichabods.
Washburn got an early advantage again, scoring two runs in the first inning. This however would be the only time that Washburn would hold the lead.
A massive
Nick Chasey triple scored the first run of the game, and would prove to be one of Newman's vital assets in the win.
Chasey had another big hit in the fourth, as his double scored two more runs and would then put himself in scoring position after advancing to third off of an error. Chasey's infield partnership with
Hunter Brown would carry over on the offense, as a Brown single brought home Chasey for the fifth Newman run of the afternoon.
A big sixth inning saw the Jets increase their run total to ten runs in the game, with several runs coming off the bases being loaded.
Connor Owens was a major threat for the Ichabods, as he went nearly perfect from the plate and brought home three runners.
Pitcher
Connor Rowe had a stellar day in his first win of the season, keeping the Ichabods quiet for most of the afternoon in his seven innings of work. After the opening inning, Rowe would only allow one more run and struck out three batters. It was one of the best performances Rowe had put in this season, and earned his win by helping keep the Jets in front almost the entire time he was pitching.
A grand slam in the eighth inning soured the mood at McCarthy, and by the end of the inning the Jets held on to just a one run lead.
Trent Trammell's return to the lineup marked two hits from the designated hitter, and his second would come in the bottom of the inning to score
Connor Owens and
Eli Wohl.
Reliever
Andrew Prieve had some work cut out for him in the ninth, but with two strikeouts, he secured a save and a series victory over Washburn.
The Jets will go for their first series sweep in the MIAA this season, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
