WICHITA - Newman Baseball wrapped up their weekend series with Washburn on Sunday, in a third consecutive game that saw many runs from both clubs. Newman, who had won the series after two comeback victories on Friday and Saturday, came with a very respectable showing, but were unable to fully comeback after another early deficit.
Two doubles from the Ichabods opened the first inning, scoring three early runs. Washburn had taken a similar lead in each of the first two games of the series, and while the Jets came dangerously close to overtaking the lead, Washburn was able to hang on by a thread through most of the game.
Dalton Smith scored the first of four home runs for the Jets, scoring Newman's first run in the second inning.
Blake Mitchell would have a large role to play in the game, as his run off an error put the game within one run.
It seemed like the Ichabods would score off of only home runs for several innings, as the visitors added five runs from hits that went out of the ballpark.
Newman responded with several of their own, as
Hunter Brown had a solo shot and
Connor Owens scored a three RBI home run to bring the lead down to just one run once again.
Both teams continued to score multiple runs in each inning, but it was Washburn who was able to take a nine run lead near the end of the game.
The Jets fought till the end however and would get within several runs to end the game.
Garrett Arnold had the Jets fourth home run of the afternoon, while a Mitchell single scored two more with no outs to begin the ninth.
Every Jet starter had at least one hit, with Mitchell having the most with four. Owens and Brown each had three RBIs in a great offensive series for both men.
The Jets will wrap up their midweek conference series with Fort Hays on Tuesday, with the contest being the rubber match with the series tied at one game apiece.
