WICHITA – Newman Athletics announced the hiring of Daphne Williams as Sports Information Director on Monday, July 1. Williams enters her third year at Newman after previously spending time on the Women's Basketball staff and in the communications departments over the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.
"Daphne brings a dedication and energy that inspires those around her," said Zach Brake, Assistant AD for Marketing and Communications. "Storytelling continues to evolve year over year. Daphne's skillset allows for Newman to adapt and lead the charge in both the creative and communications landscapes."
Williams came to Newman in the fall of 2022 following four years at Washburn University where she played basketball. The Halstead, Kansas native earned a B.A. in Mass Media: Advertising & Public Relations with a double minor in coaching and studio art. Williams recently earned an MBA in May of 2024 from Newman University.
Upon her arrival, Williams joined Newman Women's Basketball coaching staff for the 2022-23 campaign. That year's team went on to the first ever MIAA Tournament berth for women's basketball. During that year, Williams also served as the main contact in the Sports Information office for Men's and Women's Soccer, Tennis, Women's Golf, Bowling, Women's Basketball, Triathlon, and Softball. In 2023-24, Williams served as the Graduate Assistant under then first year head coach, Amy Briggs.
"I'm excited to continue to be a part of the Newman University family and be able to work in the best conference in the country for Division II. I've learned many things at Newman University the past two years in my Graduate Assistant roles and I look forward to using that experience to tell the story of Newman Athletics," said newly appointed SID, Daphne Williams.
The primary duties of the Sports Information Director include serving as the media contact for all 18 of Newman Athletics' teams, managing social media, newmanjets.com and live statistics while assisting with broadcasting efforts for the Jets. Williams will work alongside Asst. AD Zach Brake and former Men's Soccer standout, Carlos Bellosta Manchon, who continues as the Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant in 2024-25.
