Men's Soccer drops close matchup with Panthers

Jets battle playing 50 minutes with a man down

WICHITA- Newman competed in a very tough matchup with the Drury Panthers for their second home game of the season on Thursday afternoon. After a powerful win on Saturday against Southwest Baptist, the Jets were looking to continue their good form. An early red card changed the plans for the Jets, who had to adapt and make up for the missing player. Despite the huge effort from Newman, Drury took the three points home with a final 1-2 score.

How It Happened:
  • The first half started with two close warning shots from Paulo Villalobos in the first five minutes of the game. Following that, Mario De Roque Zazon tested the Panthers goalkeeper with the first shot on goal of the game.
  • Newman dominated most of the first half, out shooting the Panthers 12-1 and having most of the ball possession, but in the 34th minute the game changed. Newman received a red card that forced them to play down a man for fifty minutes.
  • Despite being a man down, the Jets found a way to score with three seconds left in the first half. A great combination between Caio Tascheto and Gabriel Dias Juliani led to the first career goal of Landon Marquez de la Plata
  • The Jets didn't back down in the second half. Gabriel Dias Juliani and Nicolo Lai had a shot each to try keep the Panthers in their half as much as possible.
  • In the second half, Drury came out with a different mentality. The Panthers out shot the Jets 13-3.
  • After thirty five minutes of Newman making huge defensive efforts, Drury tied the game with a set piece goal.
  • With two minutes to go, the Panthers found the back of the net again with another set piece goal to take the lead and leave a final 1-2 score.

Player Notes:
  • Landon Marquez de la Plata scored his first collegiate goal off of his first shot on goal. He is the fifth Jet to score a goal this season so far.
  • Caio Tascheto got his first point of the season after assisting Marquez de la Plata.
  • Gabriel Dias Juliani continued his good form, adding another point to his tally assisting Landon.

The Jets will be back on Saturday at 10 AM to play Colorado Christian for their last home non-conference game.
