Jets down the Bearcats in home opener

Volleyball completes comeback against Southwest Baptist

WICHITA- Jets Volleyball hosted the Southwest Baptist Bearcats for the first home game of the year. The last time out, the Jets fell to East Central 3-0 to wrap up the UCO/SNU Tournament.

How It Happened:
-In the first set the Jets and Bearcats were trading off points. The Bearcats found a run at the 6-5 mark and took their lead up to 10-5. After the Jets found themselves in a hole, they could never quite get their footing. The Bearcats would go on to win the first set, 25-15. Ozioma Ajekwu tallied six kills in the first set to lead the Jets offense.
- The Jets came out of the set break and had a new energy. At the 7-5 mark the Jets found themselves on a run to make the score 10-6. The Jets continued their momentum throughout the set. Two kills by Camdyn Kindred and a kill by Hannah Tymitz brought the Jets offense to life and secured a seven point lead, 14-7. From there, it was all Jets. Newman went on to win the third set, 25-16. The Jets offense tallied 14 kills in the set and three aces.
- The Jets had all the momentum in the third set from their second set win. The game was even until the Jets found their grove and went on a 6-2 run which allowed them to jump to a 15-10 lead. All of the Jets offense was getting involved in the run, with Ajekwu, Tymitz, Natalie Meyer, and Kindred all recording kills. This run forced Southwest Baptist to take a timeout to try to stop the Jets momentum. This timeout proved ineffective as the Jets continued their run out of the break. Newman found an 8-2 run to extend their lead yet again. The Jets were up big at 23-12. The Bearcats tried to create a run of their own, but ran out of time. The Jets took set three, 25-17. The Jets recorded 11 kills and three more aces.
- The Jets and Bearcats found themselves in a fourth set thriller. There were multiple lead changes throughout the set. The Jets offense was strong in the fourth set tallying 17 kills as a team. The Jets had game point at 24-23, but the Bearcats wouldn't give in that easily. The Bearcats went on to win the next two points to make it match point. However, the Jets battled it out. The Bearcats had multiple match points against the Jets, but Newman found a way to push back. At the 29-28 mark, in favor of the Jets, the Bearcats found a way to tie the game up again. This back and forth action continued until the Jets had match point at 30-29. Great scrappiness by the Jets defense allowed the offense to set up Ajekwu for the win. The Jets took set four, 31-29 to clinch the match, 3-1.

Player Notes:
- Ajekwu sets career high with 21 kills on 54.3% hitting.
- Avery Dempsey set her career high with 40 assists on the night.
- Meyer tallied 5 blocks at the net to lead the Jets.
