Emporia, Kan. -Newman traveled to Emporia to play their first MIAA game of the season. After a tough 0-3 loss at Southern Nazarene in the last non-conference game of the season, the Jets were looking to bounce back and get their first win of the season. Two late first half goals were enough for Emporia to take the final 2-0 win.
How It Happened:
- The first half started with two early shots on goal from the Hornets that were saved by Carla Apodaca.
- Newman responded with two shots on target coming from Elle Johnson who added her first shots on goal in the season.
- Both teams battled for the ball, changing possession and trying to figure out a way to score.
- The Hornets were able to get another shot on goal before the 40th minute, but it was once again saved by Apodaca.
- In the 41st minute, an ESU substitute was able to get past Apodaca for the first time in the game giving Emporia the lead.
- With less than a minute left in the half, the Hornets were able to score the second and last goal of the match off of a free kick.
- The second half saw multiple substitutions and fouls but neither team was able to change the scoreboard before the 90th minute, leaving a final 2-0 score.
Player Notes:
- Apodaca added 4 saves off of the 6 shots on target she faced.
- Logan Kinsey led the Jets with three shots.
- Apodaca and Riley Logan were the only Jets that played the full 90 minutes.
The Jets will travel to Topeka on Sunday to face Washburn at 1:00 PM in their second MIAA game of the weekend.
