Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball falls to Lions in Fort Smith

Ajekwu has match-high ten kills

Fort Smith, Ark. -Newman Volleyball competed for the second day in a row in a MIAA matchup. This time against the Fort Smith Lions. The Jets faced the No. 13 Central Oklahoma Bronchos on Friday evening in one of the toughest matches of the season so far. Less than twenty four hours later, Newman played the Lions for only the third time ever in a final 0-3 match.

How It Happened:
  • The first set was decided by small details. Both teams tallied four attacking errors and the same amount of attacking attempts. The Lions accumulated more kills and that's what gave them the advantage to take the set 16-25. The Jets totaled ten kills but in wasn't enough to compete for the set.
  • Set number two had the same final score, but the Jets were a lot more aggressive. Newman had twelve more attack attempts than the Lions, and tallied one more kill as well. The errors affected the final score of the set, as the Jets had ten attacking errors and the Lions only had three.
  • The final set was the closest one in terms of score. Once again, the Jets totaled more attacking attempts but were unable to transform most of them into kills. Fort Smith took the third set 17-25 to win the match in three sets.

Player Notes:
  • Ozioma Ajekwu had a match-high 10 kills, making it three double digit kills matches in a row for the Jets middle.
  • Avery Dempsey totaled over 20 assists for the fourth match in a row. She also added two kills and five digs.
  • Natalie Trigo led the Jets defense with 12 digs.

The Jets will head back home to host William Jewell on Tuesday, October 1st at 6:00 PM for their last non-conference match of the season.
