Men’s Basketball outlasts Missouri Southern

Fikes and Stanton III both score 17 points in win against Lions

WICHITA- The Jets hosted the Lions for their last match-up of the weekend. Against the Lions, Newman took the game 70-65, holding off the Lions second-half surge. 

How it Happened:
- The Jets started on a 5-0 run with a basket by Aaron Murphy and a three-pointer by Boston Stanton III. The Lions were able to cut the lead with a three-pointer, but Stanton III answered back with his second three of the game. The Lions offense then started to get going, but the Jets had the answer and kept their lead. Heading into the first media timeout, the Jets held the lead at 12-5. After the media break, the Jets were able to take their lead to 18-11 after baskets by Murphy and Walker, and then free throws by Sam Somerhalder. A dunk by Deadric Fikes put the Jets up 20-11 at the second media break. After the break, Fikes added another basket to put the Jets up ten points with under nine to play in the half. Southern was able to answer with a three to cut the deficit. Another basket by Murphy put the lead back out to ten points. FOr the next few possessions the Jets and Lions traded off baskets, until Fikes hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it a 13-point deficit with under seven to play. Stanton III hit his tenth point that added onto the Jets lead to make it 15. The next Jets offensive possession Murphy hit his ninth point on the game to make it 34-16 with 5:43 to play. Newman continued their hot offensive half, taking their lead to 46-22 to end the half. During this 12-6 run by the Jets, Somerhalder added four points, Stanton III scored three points, and Fikes added five points. In the half, Staton III led with 13 points. Fikes added 12 points with six rebounds. 
- Out of the second half break, Stanton III hit the Jets first basket, but the Lions then went on a small run to cut the deficit to 18 heading into the first media break of the second half. Out of the media, Jordan Glenn-Hawkins drove all the way to the rim to connect with an easy layup to put the Jets back up by 20. After his basket, the Lions hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the game to just 14 points. Murphy stopped this quick Lions run with a layup. The Lions answered, but then Glenn-Hawkin hit a step-back jumper to keep the Jets offense rolling. Somerhalder scored the next Jets basket to put the score at 56-38 with just under 12 minutes to play. A basket by Murphy on the next possession put the Jets back up by 20. Fikes then scored the next five points for the Jets to keep the steady lead. The Lions were able to cut into the deficit with a 9-0 run to make it 63-51 with six minutes left. Murphy was able to stop the Lions run with a trip to the free throw line where he connected with one. Heading into the media timeout with five minutes left, the Jets had the lead at 64-5. Glenn-Hawkins connected on the Jets offensive end after the media timeout to take it to a 13-point Jets lead. With just two minutes left to play, the Lions brought themselves back within seven points. The Lions then scored with 1:09 left to play to make it a five-point game, at 66-61. Stanton III came up with a clutch basket with 38 seconds left to put the Jets up by five. The Lions then scored on the next possession due to goal tending to put it back to a five-point deficit. Newman had a huge defensive stop that led to Murphy being fouled and sent to the free throw line with 14 seconds left. Murphy connected with both free throws to put the game away. The Jets took the win, 70-65. 

Player Notes:
- Stanton III and Fikes led with 17 points a piece.
- Murphy scored 16 points. 
- Somerhalder added ten points. And eight rebounds. 
-Glenn-Hawkins pulled down nine rebounds, four assists, and eight points. 

The Jets hit the road next week to face the Mules and Ichabods.
