Jets roll past Arkansas-Fort Smith

Men’s Basketball completes the season sweep over the Lions

WICHITA- Men's Basketball hosted Arkansas-Fort Smith for their second match up of the year. Earlier this season, the Jets held on to win at 70-67. Sam Somerhalder led the Jets with 18 points in the first match up. This time out, the Jets took the win 78-64. 

How it Happened:
- The Jets offense started off hot, first with a three by Aaron Murphy on the first play of the game. Sam Somerhalder then scored on the next possession to put the Jets up 6-0. The Lions then closed the gap to two points, but Newman put on an 11-0 run to take their lead to 17-4. During this run, the Jets hit three three-pointers in a row, hit by three different Jets, and added a layup by Jordan Glenn-Hawkins. The Lions hit a three to kill the Jets run, but Deadric Fikes hit his own three on the next possession to keep the Jets offense rolling. Heading into the first media break, the Jets had a 20-9 lead. Out of the break, Devin Walker hit his first basket of the night to take the lead out to 12 points. By the ten minute mark of play, the Jets had hit six threes at 54% from behind the arc. The Lions were then able to cut the Jets lead to just 11 with under six minutes to play as the Jets offense cooled off. A huge three from Jayden Schoen got the Jets offense going again as his points were followed by a Somerhalder basket. These back-to-back scores gave the Jets the 33-19 lead heading into the final media break of the half. With just under three minutes to play, the Lions had cut the deficit to single digits, at nine points. A floater by Boston Stanton III put Newman up by 11, but the Lions continued to chip away at the Jets lead. Heading into the halftime break, the Jets held the lead at 35-28. Somerhalder, Murphy, and Stanton III all scored seven points in the half. 
- Out of the half, the Lions were able to cut the Jets lead to just two at 37-35 after a 7-0 run in the first four minutes of play. Somerhalder ended the run with a layup to keep the Jets up four. The next possession, Thatcher McClure hit from behind the arc to extend the lead to seven. The Lions then answered with a three of their own. Murphy later answered with another three to take the lead to six heading into the first media timeout of the second half. The Lions continued to fight back against the Jets and chipped into the deficit. With just under 13 minutes to play, the Lions had cut the deficit to just three points. By the 9:30 minute mark, the Jets were able to grow their lead to six points, after Somerhalder finished his 13th point of the contest. By the second media timeout of the half, the Jets held the 53-51 lead. The Jets then connected with three, three-pointers, from three different Jets to take the 62-55 lead with under six to play. The Lions were able to pull back within three, but the Jets responded with points by Stanton III, Somerhalder, and Fikes to put the Jets up double-digit points with just under 3:30 to play. A tough drive to the basket by Stanton III put the Jets up 71-59 with two minutes remaining, the next possession Stanton III hit a dagger three to clinch the Jets win. The final score, Newman 78 , Arkansas-Fort Smith 64. 

Player Notes: 
-Stanton III led the Jets offense with 18 points. 
-Somerhalder hit a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and dished out six assists. 
-Murphy scored 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

The Jets finish their four-game home stint against Central Oklahoma and Rogers State next weekend.
