WICHITA- Men's Basketball is coming off a win against the Lions on Thursday night. Earlier this season, the Jets defeated Northeastern State on the road, 85-66. This time out against the Riverhawks, the Jets completed the season sweep with a 76-73 win.
How it Happened:
- The Jets started with a 6-2 lead,
Thatcher McClure hit four of those six points. The Riverhawks brought it to a one point game, but a basket by
Sam Somerhalder and an
Aaron Murphy three gave the Jets an 11-7 lead. At the 15 minute mark,
Boston Stanton III earned a trip to the line for an and-one where he connected. This three point play gave the Jets the 14-7 lead. The Riverhawks closed the gap to a three point game with just over 13 minutes left in the half. By the media timeout, the Jets had extended their lead to five with a basket by Somerhalder. With just over nine minutes remaining, the Riverhawks took their first lead of the game at 19-18. Murphy then scored four of the next Jets points, which were followed by two free throws by Stanton III which gave the Jets a 24-19 lead. NSU then put on a short run, closing the Jets lead to just one point. After the points by Stanton III, the Riverhawks went on an 8-0 run, taking the lead from the Jets and heading into the final media timeout up 27-24. McClure brought the Jets back within one with just over three minutes to play after knocking down a three. The next possession,
Jordan Glenn-Hawkins hit a layup for the Jets to take the 32-31 lead. Somerhalder added his eighth point to end the half, giving the Jets a one point lead at 36-35. Murphy led the Jets with 9 points in the half. As a team, Newman shot 48.4% from the field. The Jets defense held NSU to just 37% shooting from the field and 13% from behind the arc.Â
- NSU was first to score out of the halftime break, but a huge slam by McClure got the Jets offense going on their first possession. Later, Stanton III and McClure hit back-to-back baskets to put the Jets up 43-39. With under 17 minutes to play, the Riverhawks were able to take back the lead after a three-pointer. The Jets then went on a 4-0 run to take the lead back at 49-46 with under 15 to play. At the 12:15 mark,
Jayden Schoen connected with his first points of the game, connecting from deep. This three put the Jets up four. NSU then were able to take the lead two minutes later at 54-52. Somehalder then tied it back up, 54-54, after connecting with his 14th point of the contest. The Jets and Riverhawks continued to battle back and forth for the lead. After a Glenn-Hawkins three, followed by a
Deadric Fikes score the Jets had the three point lead with just under five minutes to play. After the under five media timeout, Glenn-Hawkins hit from deep to take the Jets lead to 72-66. The Riverhawks pulled within one point with under 1:30 to play. Somerhalder finished a tough drive to the basket to give the Jets a three point edge with a minute to play. The Jets came up with multiple defensive stops in a row to close out the game. The Jets defeated the Riverhawks 76-73.Â
