Baseball cruises past SNU in the season opener

BETHANY, Okla. -Newman started their 2025 campaign facing the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm in Bethany. The Jets showcased a powerful offense and a solid defense in a 13-3 win.

How It Happened:
Eli Wohl got things started for the Jets earning a walk in the first at bat of the season for Newman. He then stole second base in the next play, putting himself within scoring distance. Trent Trammel got the first hit in the game with a single to shortstop that was well defended by SNU and ended the top of the first. Gio De Graauw led the Jet defense in the bottom of the first with two strikeouts, his first ones as a Jet. Blake Mitchell and Jack Kiser recorded a hit each in the top of the second, but it wasn't enough to get on the board. Three quick outs by the Jets ended the bottom of the second and brought the Jets offense back out. A hit by Hunter Brown and another walk by Wohl, put two runners on base early in the third. Anthony Cannavino earned a hit and reached first on a fielders choice leaving a runner on first and third. A sacrifice fly to center field by Pierson Gunnell scored Brown to take the first lead of the season. After De Graauw's third strikeout, SNU scored a home run to tie the game. Gio De Graauw closed out the third inning earning another swinging strikeout. Mitchell got on base after being hit by a pitch, and then stole second base in the following sequence. A single to right field by Nicolas Ely scored Mitchell to regain the lead, 2-1. De Graauw continued his great form in the bottom of the fourth, adding three more strikeouts to his tally. Back at the top of the lineup, Wohl got his first hit of the game with a double to center field. Cannavino got on base too off of a hit by the pitcher. Gunnell's double to center field scored Wohl and left two more runners on base with no outs recorded. Micah Kobuszewski got the first home run of the season for Newman with a bomb to left field that scored three runs and left the score at 6-1. The Jets added three more hits before a sacrifice fly by Ely led to the seventh Jet run of the game and the fifth in the same inning. Gio started the bottom of the fifth with his eighth strikeout of the game. The Jets defense held the Crimson Storm to no runs with two quick outs. In the top of the sixth, Wohl added his second hit of the game with a single to shortstop. After that, Gunnell recorded his second double of the game, moving Wohl up to third. A sacrifice fly to center field by Kobuszewski scored Wohl to increase to lead to seven runs. A single to center field by Trammell scored Gunnell. Then, another single to center field, this time by Mitchell, saw Trammell score the tenth run for the Jets. Kiser recorded the third consecutive single for Newman with a hit to the right side. Ely continued the batting streak, earning his third RBI of the game with a single through the right side that scored Mitchell. After another positive inning for the Jets, De Graauw left his place for Andrew Hudson. He faced four different batters and struck out three of them, swinging.
