Gorillas outlast the Jets in conference home opener

Men’s Basketball falls to Pitt State, 86-76

WICHITA- The Jets hosted Pittsburg State for their conference home opener. Pitt State took the match-up, 86-76. 

How it Happened:
- The Gorillas started the first half with a 7-2 run. The Jets then got their offense rolling with points by Aaron Murphy, Thatcher McClure, and Sam Somerhalder to make it a two point game five minutes in. At the first media break of the half, the Gorillas led 15-7. Out of the media break, the Jets closed it to a five point difference with baskets by Murphy and Somerhalder. Through the first seven minutes of play, Murphy had seven of the Jets 17 points. Deadric Fikes sunk his first basket from behind the arc to cut the game to four points at 19-15. After a Gorilla score, Murphy connected with an and-one opportunity bringing the Jets within just three points.   At the second media break, the Jets trailed 25-20. After the break, the Gorillas scored to take their lead to seven, but Boston Stanton III cut the deficit to four after connecting with a three-pointer. Two free throws by Fikes then closed the gap to just two points with under seven minutes to play in the half. Off of a Jets defensive steal by Jordan Glenn-Hawkins, Stanton III hit another behind the arc to take the Jets first lead of the game at 28-27. After this point, the Jets and Gorillas traded off leads with it continuously being a one point game. With under two minutes to play, the Gorillas pulled away with a six point lead at 36-30. Heading into the half, the Jets trailed 41-30. Murphy led the offense with 11 points going 3-6 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line. 
- Out of the halftime break, the Gorillas were first to strike. Then Somerhalder scored the Jets first four baskets to keep the spread at 13 points. McClure then added on to Somerhalder's baskets with back-to-back three pointers to cut the game to 51-44 with 15 minutes left to play. The Gorillas clapped back with a three-pointer of their own to put the spread back to ten points. After a technical foul by the Gorillas, the Jets capitalized making both free throws and scoring on their possession to cut the score to 57-53 with under 13 to play. The next Jets possession Stanton III made his way to the free throw line where he connected with both to cut it to a two-point game. At the second media timeout of the half, the Gorillas were able to take their lead to five points with 9:29 to play. After the timeout, Pitt State was able to pull their lead to nine. McClure hit another three on the night to put the game back to a two possession game with six minutes remaining. The Gorillas hit back-to-back threes to extend their lead to 11 with 3:31 to play. A Jets basket by Somerhalder put it back to a single-digit game. Though the Jets chipped away at the Gorillas lead, the Gorillas put the game away with late free throws. The Jets dropped the contest, 86-76.

Player Notes:
- Somerhalder led the Jets wtih 21 points, going 10-16, and six rebounds.
- Murphy added 19 points going 6-10 from the field, 2-4 from three. 
- McClure scored 15 points, going 4-7 from behind the arc with seven rebounds. 
- Stanton III scored 12 points for the Jets.
