Jets Prepare to Host Gorillas in Friday Night Matchup

Last Time Out
The Jets traveled to Missouri to face Northwest Missouri to open weekend play. Newman would fall short, 3-0. The Jets couldn't gain momentum in the first set, falling behind early. Northwest Missouri maintained control throughout, taking the opening set 25-8. Newman kept pace with the Bearcats to start the second set. Kills from Avery Kelley, Hannah Tymitz, and Isabella Lamb cut the deficit to 10-8. Two aces by Sky Miller brought the Jets within one at 11-10. However, the Bearcats responded with a 7-1 run to extend their lead to 18-11, forcing a Newman timeout. Following the break, Northwest Missouri closed out the set, 25-17. The Jets battled in the third set, forcing extra points to extend play. After falling behind 13-6, Newman went on a 7-0 run to tie it at 13-all. The Bearcats regained a 15-13 lead, but the Jets answered again with kills from Lamb and Tymitz to even the score at 16-all. Newman continued their push with a 6-0 run to go up 21-16, fueled by kills from Miller and Lamb and a service ace by Tymitz. The Jets held a 23-20 advantage before Northwest Missouri rallied, taking a 24-23 lead. A Miller kill tied it at 24-all, but the Bearcats closed the set on a 2-0 run to win 26-24 and take the match 3-0.

On Saturday afternoon the Jets faced off with MoWest in a match the Griffons took 3-0. MoWest established control early, jumping ahead 5-2 after a service ace from Anna Weberg and a pair of kills by Taylor Russell. Newman stayed within reach as Avery Kelley and Hannah Tymitz found kills to make it 7-6, but the Griffons continued to build momentum behind a pair of kills, extending their lead to 15-10. The Jets trimmed the deficit to 15-11 following a Sky Miller kill, their closest margin of the set. MoWest responded quickly with a run fueled by another pair of kills to push the lead to 20-13. Newman struggled to slow the Griffons' attack as a final kill from Russell sealed the set, 25-17, giving the Griffons' the early advantage. The Griffons opened the second set with a slight edge before Newman evened the score at 7-all behind a service ace from Sky Miller and a kill by Hannah Tymitz. The Griffons responded with a steady run to take a 15-11 lead, forcing the Jets to take a timeout. The Jets stayed within striking distance midway through the set as Avery Kelley and Isabella Lamb contributed key kills, but MoWest consistency kept them in control. The Jets cut the deficit to 23-21 after a kill from Miller, but the Griffons found a way to close the set out 25-22 to get out to a 2-0 lead in the match. Newman started strong in the third set, taking an early lead behind kills from Hannah Tymitz and Madalyn Hoot. The Jets and MoWest traded points through the first half of the set, with the score even at 10-all. Kills from Miller and Lamb helped Newman edge ahead 15-14 before the Griffons answered to tie it again at 16-all. The set remained close as the Jets continued to battle. Newman pushed back from a 20-18 deficit to even the score at 20-all with key points from Lamb and Miller. The two teams traded points down the stretch, with Newman pulling even again at 23-all after a Tymitz kill. The Griffons'  regained control out of a Jet timeout, scoring the final two points to take the set 25-23 and close out the match, 3-0.

Scouting the Jets 
Isabella Lamb leads the Jets offense through 20 games, with a team high 164 kills and a .284 hitting percentage, while Sky Miller and Hannah Tymitz have both eclipsed the 160 kill mark.  Madalyn Hoot facilitates the Jets offense, averaging 8.04 assists per set, good for 540 assists this season.  On the defensive side of the net, Brooklyn Lane continues to lead the back row with 252 digs while  Lamb leads the Jets at the net, with 40 blocks throughout the season, averaging 0.64 blocks per set. Miller and Lane share the team lead with 24 service aces apiece, helping the Jets reach the 100-ace mark as a team this season.

Behind Enemy Lines
The Gorillas enter the week on a four-conference match skid after falling to Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State last weekend. The Gorillas snapped their overall streak with a win over Rockhurst on Wednesday night. Vix Vilott leads the Pittsburg State attack with 181 kills on a .174 hitting percentage, while Maliyah Johnson follows closely behind with 176 kills and a .217 clip. Setter Jesa Wallace continues to run the Gorillas' offense, totaling 540 assists this season. On the defensive side, Josie McCroskey anchors the back row with 373 digs, and Anna Dean has been a force at the net, leading the team with 106 blocks.


The Series
-The Gorillas have won 14 of 15 against the Jets, including a 3–0 win earlier this month. The Jets last win against the Gorillas came in April 2021.

The Jets will host Fort Hays and nationally ranked Nebraska–Kearney next week.
