Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jets outlasted by Wildcats

WICHITA- Men's Basketball hosted Wayne State College for a non-conference match up. The Jets would fall short, 87-84.

- To open the first half, the Jets went on a 6-0 run, fueled by baskets from Brandon Wilson, Trae Clayton, and Jayden Schoen. Wayne State finally broke through at the 16:00 mark, sparking a 5-0 run that cut the Jets lead to 6-5. Newman answered with four straight points to go up 10-5, and after a Wildcat bucket, Schoen knocked down a three to push the lead back to six. Schoen later added his seventh point to make it 15-7 Jets. Newman extended the margin to ten with 12 minutes left, but the Wildcats responded, trimming the deficit to one at the nine-minute mark. Though the Jets held the lead, WSC continued to chip away. A basket from Sam Somerhalder and a three from Jacob Joe restored a six-point cushion for Newman with five minutes remaining. WSC again cut the lead to one possession, but Somerhalder halted the run with his sixth point. Wayne State eventually tied the game at 26-26 with three minutes to go, but Newman never surrendered the lead. To close the half, Kobe Freeman buried a three to send the Jets into the break up 33-29.

- Wayne State opened the second half with a 5-0 run to take the lead, but Newman quickly tied it at 34-34. The two teams traded blows, and at the first media timeout the Wildcats held a 40-36 advantage. They maintained that lead until the 13-minute mark, when a three by Glenn-Hawkins cut the deficit to three. The back-and-forth battle continued, and Somerhalder's tenth point brought Newman within two with ten minutes to play. WSC briefly re-established a four-point lead, but the Jets continued to hang tough. A three-pointer from Wilson put Newman back in front, 65-64, with just over seven minutes left. Moments later, another triple—this time from Schoen—gave the Jets a four-point edge at the six-minute mark. Wayne State fought back to tie the game at 71-71 with under five minutes remaining, then went up four with three to play. Wilson hit a clutch three in the final minute to bring Newman within three, and Joe buried three free throws to cut it to a one point game with 21 seconds left. However, the Wildcats came up with a defensive stop and converted two free throws on the other end. Though Wilson knocked down a last-second three, the Jets ran out of time, falling 87–84.

Player Notes:
- Brandon Wilson led the Jets with 23 points, shooting 8–14 from the field and 3–6 from beyond the arc.
- Jacob Joe added 15 points and went a perfect 7–7 at the free-throw line. He also tallied seven assists.

The Jets return to action Tuesday, hosting Manhattan Christian for Kids Day at 10:30 a.m.
