WICHITA- The Jets hosted the Hornets for their first matchup of the season. The Jets stunned the Hornets with an 89-85 win.
How it Happened:
- The Jets were off to a hot start after a 7-0 run with baskets by
Jordan Glenn-Hawkins and
Aaron Murphy. The Hornets were able to close the gap to 7-5 with under 17 minutes to play. More points by Glenn-Hawkins pushed the Jets lead out to four. ESU cut the deficit to just one point on the next possession, but
Thatcher McClure answered with a basket to keep the lead. The Hornets were able to take the lead at 13-11 after a 5-0 run at the 15-minute mark. Free throws by
Boston Stanton III tied the game at 13 all, but the Hornets regained the lead with a three pointer on the next possession. The Hornets grew their lead to six with 13 minutes to play. A 12-3 run by the Jets gave them back the lead at 26-23 at the 7:30 mark. Shortly after, ESU retook the lead with a three pointer. A small 4-0 run regained the Jets lead at 31-28. The Hornets were able to take the lead back, but a basket by
Deadric Fikes tied it up at 33 all with three minutes left. Another 4-0 run by the Jets put the score at 40-35 in favor of NU. Emporia State was able to cut it to a three-point deficit with just over a minute to go, but Fikes connected from behind the arc to make it a six-point Newman lead with under a minute left. The Jets ended the half with back-to-back threes to help them secure the 46-40 lead at the halfway mark. Fikes led the Jets with 11 points in the half. Murphy and Glenn-Hawkins both scored ten points apiece in the half.
- Out of the break, the Hornets scored first but the Jets were quick to respond. Back-to-back scores by Stanton III put the Jets up nine points. Another three-pointer by Stanton III put the Jets up ten points with 17 minutes to go. By the 14-minute mark, the Hornets had cut the deficit to just three points. Free throws by Fikes gave the Jets a five-point lead, but the Hornets offense was rolling and cut it back to three points with 13 to go. A three-pointer Stanton III put the Jets up six. Devin Walker hit another Jets three for the six-point lead. Walker's three was followed by a McClure basket to make it an eight-point lead. Later, a five-point run by Stanton III put the Jets up 11 points with nine minutes to play. The Hornets cut the deficit to five points with seven minutes to play. A three-pointer by Stanton III pushed the Jets to an eight-point lead with under six to play. The next score came at the 3:30 mark by the Hornets, but
Jayden Schoen answered with a three-pointer to make it a ten-point lead for the Jets. With 1:45 to go, the Hornets had chipped away at the Jets lead to make it an 81-78 game.
Sam Somerhalder scored on the next possession with a free throw to make it a four-point lead. The Hornets then hit two free throws to cut the deficit to two points. A dagger three-pointer by Stanton III put the Jets up five points with 32 seconds left. The Hornets were able to cut the game to two points on two different occasions, but the Jets hit free throws to close out the game. The Jets took the win, 89-85.
