Fifth inning decides series opener in Fort Smith

Kobuszewski and Brown hit home runs

FORT SMITH, Ark. -Baseball played the first game of their first conference series away from home against Fort Smith in Arkansas. A ten-run inning by the Lions decided the game, leaving a final 7-18 score.

How It Happened:
The top of the first inning started with Eli Wohl hitting a double to right center field to get the Jets offense started, but two quick outs retired the side for Newman. The Lions were only able to get one hit in the top of the first, leaving that runner on base. Pierson Gunnell added a hit for the Jets in the top of the second. Then, Gio De Graauw recorded his second and third strikeout to end the second inning. After two scoreless innings, Hunter Brown and Eli Wohl hit a single each to put two runners on base with only one out recorded. Micah Kobuszewski drove in those runners and himself after he hit his second home run of the season off of a bomb to right center field. After the top of the third, the score was 3-0 for Newman. UAFS took the lead from the Jets in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs off of four hits and four walks. With two of the three outs already recorded, Cole Landgraf came in the game to replace the starter, De Graauw.

Jack Kiser got a hit to right field in the first at bat for Newman in the top of the fourth. Hunter Brown seized the opportunity and batted Kiser in with a double to left center field to cut the difference down to two. Following that, Anthony Cannavino had a single through the left side that aided Brown to score the fifth run for the Jets. Eli Wohl batted his second double of the day, but the Lions recorded the third out before Newman could score the tying run. Landgraf held the Lions off to only one hit in the bottom of the fourth. Trent Trammell had a single to the shortstop to start the fifth inning but it didn't lead to anything as the Lions retired the next three batters. After four and a half very close innings, UAFS distanced themselves from the Jets with some very accurate hitting that led to ten runs, seven hits and one runner left on base in the bottom of the fifth, leaving a 5-16 score. Before the tenth run was scored, Kaden Wright replaced Landgraf on the mound. Then, in the top of the sixth Hunter Brown recorded his second home run of the season hitting a long ball over the left field fence. After that, Andrew Hudson entered the field to pitch for Wright and only allowed one hit in the bottom of the sixth.

Kobuszewski doubled to left field and then scored Newman's seventh run off of a ground out by Gunnell in the top of the seventh. Hudson was able to record two strikeouts to prevent the Lions from ending the game in the bottom of the seventh. Then, in the top of the eighth, Nick Chasey had a single hit through the right side that gave the Jets hope for a late attempt to come back. But the Lions denied them that chance. UAFS ended the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two run home run.
