Baseball defeats Cougars in extra innings

Jets finish 2-1 against CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo.- The Jets faced the Cougars for the third game of the series. Yesterday, the Jets split with CCU after taking game one 9-3, and dropping game two 6-1. Today, Newman took the win in extra innings at 12-10. 

How it Happened:
Nick Chasey got things started for the Jets in the top of the first with a single to left field. Following his lead, Pierson Gunnell batted Chasey in with a double to right center field. Micah Kobuszewski earned a walk to put two runners on base for Newman. After that, a long single to center field by Blake Mitchell scored Gunnell and an error by the third baseman aided Kobuszewski to score the third Jet run. In the bottom of the first, Chan Yoon struck out swinging the first batter that he faced. Then, he helped the defense to record two more outs to end the first. The Jets were unable to get on base in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, the Cougars recorded three hits which led to them scoring five runs to take the lead. The first two came off of an error and the following three came from a triple to left center that scored three runners. In the top of the third, Newman was not able to record any hits. Then, in the bottom of the third the Jets held CCU down to no hits as well. 
Blake Mitchell earned a walk in the top of the fourth. Later, Jack Kiser got a hit to right field that advanced Mitchell to third base. A balk by the Cougars' pitcher advanced Kiser to second and scored Mitchell to put the score at 4-5 in favor of CCU. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Yoon recorded his second strikeout and aided the Jets' defense to record three outs without allowing any hits. After that, Hunter Brown doubled to left field. He then advanced to third and continued running to score off of a wild pitch and tie the game at 5-5. Gunnell also got a hit but it didn't end on a run scored.  The Cougars were able to record two hits and a leading run in the bottom of the fifth which led to a pitching change for the Jets. Fran Montanez got on the mound for Newman and recorded two outs to end the inning. In the top of the sixth, Trent Trammell was the only Jet able to get a hit. After three outs, CCU's offense came out. They were also only able to get one hit, and Montanez recorded his first strikeout of the game. 
- In the top of the seventh, two Jets got on base off of a walk and a hit by pitch, but a good defensive effort by CCU prevented them from scoring. A hit by pitch, three hits and two runs allowed led to another pitching change for Newman. Colby Wilson entered the field to record two outs, and close the inning with a strikeout. With the score at 5-8, the Jets earned two walks but were unable to turn them into runs. The Jets then held CCU to just one hit and no runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, the Jets needed three runs to tie it up. Wohl started off the Jets with a walk. Then, Chasey doubled down the right field line which scored a run for the Jets to cut the deficit to just two runs. Then, Gunnell reached base on a fielder's choice and Chasey advanced to third base. A single by Kobuszewski scored Chasey to make it an 8-7 game. Trammell then added a single that pushed Kobuszewski to second base. A huge double by Mitchell scored two runs, allowing the Jets to complete the comeback and take the lead at 9-8. The Cougars got out of the inning trailing by just one run. In the top of the ninth inning, the Cougars tied it at nine all with a home run. This forced a tenth inning. In the top of the tenth inning, the Jets bats got going. A double by Brown scored a run for the Jets. Then a single to center field by Sutton Titsworth scored Brown to make it 11-9 for the Jets. An RBI by Kobuszewski scored Titsworth to make it a 12-9 game heading into the bottom of the tenth. The Cougars were only able to add one run in the bottom of the inning, which allowed the Jets to take the win at 12-10. 
 
Player Notes:
-Mitchell led the Jets with three RBIs with two hits. 
-Kobuszewski added two RBIs with one hit.
-Chasey added three hits with one RBI.
-Gunnell, Trammell, and Brown added two hits apiece. 
-Wilson recorded the win, Alex Gillig recorded the save. 
 
The Jets are back on February 14th and 15th where they will host Southwest Baptist. The Jets will play a single game on Feburary 14th and a double header on the 15th.
