WICHITA - McCarthy field hosted the series finale between the Jets and the Griffons on Sunday afternoon. After splitting the doubleheader on Saturday, the Jets won the decider 5-13 to take the series.
How It Happened:
Fran Montanez started on the mound for the Jets and struck out a batter to end the top of the first inning. Before that last out was recorded, the Griffons got on the board off of a double and a sacrifice fly. Then, Eli Wohl and Nick Chasey earned walks to get two runners on base for the Jets in the first two at bats of the game. Following that, Micah Kobuszewski hit a sacrifice fly to advance Wohl to third. The Griffons attempted to get Chasey out when he ran to steal second base, but failed. Chasey stole second and Wohl ran freely to score the tying run for Newman. Trent Trammell singled to center field to score Chasey's go ahead run. In the top of the second, MWSU tied the game up at two off of two hits. The Jets couldn't answer in the bottom of the second with any hits or runs. Brycen Schoenhofer replaced an injured Montanez on the mound in the start of the third. Then, Jack Kiser, Brown, and Trammell connected to record a 463 double play that ended the top of the inning. In the bottom, Brown earned a lead off walk which was followed by another walk by Wohl. Then, Trammell single scored both runners to give the Jets a two run lead going into the fourth.
MWSU started the fourth with a home run and got two more hits, but ended the half inning still trailing by one. Mitchell and Ely walked, and Becker hit a single to load the bases for Newman with only one out recorded. Hunter Brown seized the opportunity and hit a grand slam with a bomb to center field. After four, Newman led 3-8. In the fifth inning only Trammell was able to get a hit, but neither team was able to score. Caden Poor entered the game in the top of the fifth and ended the top of the inning with a swinging strike out. Poor also ended the top of the sixth with a swinging strike out, bringing the Jets bats back out. Four consecutive walks scored the ninth run for the Jets, and then, a sacrifice fly by Kobuszewski scored Nicolas Ely for the Jets' tenth run.
The Griffons scored their fourth run after a walk and a single, bringing Kellen Curtis out of the Jets bullpen. In the bottom of the seventh, Jack Kiser was the only Jet able to get on base but he wasn't able to score. In a late attempt to come back, the Griffons scored off of a single, an error and a fielder's choice. Curtis was substituted by Cole Landgraf on the mound, looking to end the inning without allowing the Griffons the chance to get closer. Landgraf struck out the last batter he faced to end the offensive inning for MWSU. Eli Wohl hit a lead off single in the bottom of the eighth, then, Chasey walked and Kobuszewski got on base off of an error to load the bases for Newman. Trammell's sacrifice fly out and Mitchell's single scored all three runners to give the Jets an eight run lead. Jared Newton entered the game in the top of the ninth and helped the defense record three ground outs to end the game. The Jets claimed the win 5-13.
