Jets drop marathon game to MSSU

Wohl, Kobuszewski, Mitchell, Chasey, and Brown hit homers

WICHITA - Baseball hosted the Missouri Southern Lions in a single midweek conference matchup. After a MSSU win in their previous meeting this season, the Lions took the game 25-24 in the twelfth inning.

How It Happened:
The Lions were able to get two early hits in the top of the first, but a good defensive effort by the Jets prevented them from scoring. Cole Landgraf, who started on the mound for Newman, struck out the last batter to end the half inning. Eli Wohl, Trent Trammell, and Micah Kobuszewski all hit singles in the first three at bats for the Jets, with the last one scoring Wohl. Then, Blake Mitchell hit a double to score Trammell. Following that, Nick Chasey hit a sacrifice fly out to score Newman's third run of the game. The second inning went scoreless for both teams and only the Lions were able to get a couple of hits. Fran Montanez entered the game on the mound for Newman in the top of the third and didn't allow any hits or runs. Trammell was able to get a hit but it didn't lead to anything. After three, Newman led 3-0.

Lance Elsen subbed in for Montanez in the top of the fourth, but after giving up some free bases, Maximus Moreno came in for him. Two hits and more free bases scored five runs and forced another pitching change for Newman. Jared Newton struck out the last batter of the half inning but not before the Lions scored two more runs. Pierson Gunnell earned a walk to start the bottom of the fourth. Then, Jack Kiser hit a single to put two runners on base. Nick Ely was then hit by the pitch to load the bases for the Jets. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch scored two of the runners to set the score at 7-5 in favor of the Lions. Then, Eli Wohl hit a two-run home run to tie the game at seven. After that, Trammell earned a walk and Mitchell hit another home run to give the Jets a two run lead. In the fifth, Newton held the Lions down to no runs or hits. Kiser walked in the second at bat for Newman in the fifth inning. Then, for the third time in the game, the Jets hit another home run this time coming from Hunter Brown, scoring two more runs. A double play by Trammell and Brown ended the top of the sixth and brought the Jets bats back out. A walk by Trammell and a home run to center field by Micah Kobuszewski scored the Jets' twelfth and thirteenth run.

The Lions scored eleven runs in the top of the seventh off of four home runs, with two of them being grand slams, to take an 18-13 lead. Kellen Curtis, Colby Wilson, and Caden Poor pitched for Newman and were unable to stop MSSU's bats. The Jets couldn't answer in the bottom of the seventh. Poor struck out the last two batters he faced in the top of the eighth, but the Lions were able to load the bases and score a run before the end of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, a double by Nick Chasey scored Trammell who got on base with a hit by the pitcher. Gavin Wakefield started the ninth inning on the mound for Newman, but a hit and some free bases, Andrew Hudson replaced him. Kaden Wright replaced an injured Hudson and got a strikeout to record the second out. The Lions increased their lead by 5, ending the top of the ninth 24-14. Kiser and Ely earned walks to start the ninth. Then, three consecutive singles scored both runners to cut the difference down to eight. A sacrifice fly by Kobuszewski, a double by Mitchell and a home run by Nick Chasey put the Jets within three runs of the Lions. Two hits by the pitcher, a wild pitch, and a single hit by Nick Ely scored the ninth run of the inning for Newman, and set the score at 24-23. Two wild pitches and a passed ball scored the Jets' tying run. Showcasing incredible resilience, the Jets came back from a ten run deficit to take the game to extra innings. Gio De Graauw entered the game in the top of the tenth and struck out a batter to end the half inning. Mitchell hit a lead off double but the Jets were unable to bat him in. De Graauw struck out two batters to record the second and third out and end the top of the eleventh. Wohl got a single but the Jets were unable to score him too. The Lions scored a run off of two hits in the top of the twelve, but a great defensive play by the Jets retired the side. Two Jets got on base but Newman was unable to score the tying run, giving the Lions a 25-24 win.

- Wohl went 5-8 with 3 runs, 3 RBIs and a homer.
