Emporia, Kan. -The Newman Baseball team traveled to Emporia to play in-state rivals Emporia State Hornets. In the first out of a three-game series, ESU took the win 7-10.
How It Happened:
The Jets got three quick runs on the board in the top of the first after a single by
Nick Chasey was scored by
Micah Kobuszewski's double, and then, he was scored by
Blake Mitchell's sixth bomb of the season. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the second scoring three runs off of two singles and a couple of free bases. In the top of the third, Kobuszewski's ground out was enough for Wohl to score the go ahead run. He previously got on base with a single through the left side. Then, in the bottom half of the inning, Newman, led by
Aleks Koppel, didn't allow any runs.
Newman added two more runs to their tally after a hit by
Pierson Gunnell, an earned walk by
Jack Kiser, and a bunt single by Nick Ely loaded the bases.
Hunter Brown capitalized on the opportunity and singled through the right side to score two runners. After the top of the fourth, the Jets led 6-3. The Hornets went off to hit three home runs, two singles,and a triple to take a 6-9 lead.
Blake Mitchell was the only player able to get a hit in the fifth inning, but neither team was able to score.
Cole Landgraf entered the game on the mound in the top of the fifth. The sixth inning went hitless and scoreless with
Hunter Brown being the only player able to get on base.
Kobuszewski and Trammell singled for two early one out hits. Gunnell was then hit by the pitch to load the bases with one out recorded. Another hit by the pitcher, this time to
Jack Kiser, scored Kobuszewski for Newman's seventh run. Three free bases and a fielder's choice scored a runner for the Hornets with two outs recorded in the bottom of the seventh. The Jets couldn't score in the top of the eighth. The Hornets didn't score either in the bottom half of the inning. Going into the top of the ninth, ESU led 7-10.
Trent Trammell was able to hit a lead off single, but the Hornets ended the game with a double play. The final score was 7-10.
