Edmond, Okla. -The Jets took on UCO in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. After dropping the first two game of the series, Newman battled but lost the third and last game, 2-7.
How It Happened:
Neither team was able to score or get a hit in the first inning.
Gio De Graauw was the starter for Newman on the mound and struck out the first batter he faced in the game. The second frame was similar with both teams being unable to score, but with the difference that
Blake Mitchell got on base with a single to the shortstop. In the top of the third,
Thomas Munn got on base with an earned walk and
Eli Wohl reached on a fielder's choice, but Newman couldn't score them. The Bronchos saw an opportunity to take the lead and capitalized on it, scoring two runs off of a single, a double, and three free bases. De Graauw recorded all three outs retiring two batters swinging and one looking. In the fourth, Nick Ely got a single hit through the right side, and Gio added his fifth strike out of the game, but both teams went scoreless.
The Jets couldn't get on base in the third and UCO seized the moment to add one more run to their tally from two triples. Through five innings, the score was 0-3 in favor of the Bronchos.
Micah Kobuszewski reached base with a walk, but a fielder's choice retired him and ended the top half of the sixth. Central Oklahoma was able to get three different runners on base, with two of them at the same time, but a good defensive effort by the Jets and De Graauw's sixth "K" denied them from scoring.
Jack Kiser took a hit by the pitcher to get on base, but two consecutive strike outs ended the offensive inning for NU.
Chan Yoon substituted De Graauw on the mound in the bottom of the seventh. Two singles, an error, and a double scored two more Broncho runs. Wohl and
Trent Trammell hit back-to-back singles in the top of the eighth with only one out recorded. Then, a fielder's choice let Wohl score Newman's first run of the game to set the score at 1-5.
Jared Newton came in the game for Yoon in the bottom half of the eighth. Three singles and a walk led to two UCO runs. Hoping for another late Jet comeback,
Sutton Titsworth scored Mitchell, who got on base with a hit by the pitch, but the Bronchos recorded the third and last out before Newman could get any close. The final score was 2-7.
