Baseball shows resilience in dominant win over RSU

Claremore, Okla. -The Jets played game two at Rogers State in a Saturday afternoon game. After a late comeback win from the Hillcats on Friday's series opener, Newman was looking for their second conference win. After a very close start to the game and multiple comebacks, Newman took the game 11-6.

How It Happened:
Micah Kobuszewski was the first Jet to get on base in the top of the first after an earned walk. Then, he stole second to get within scoring distance. Trent Trammell's single was all Micah needed to score Newman's first run of the game. Aleks Koppel started on the mound for the Jets and denied the Hillcats from scoring in the bottom of the first. Then, Nick Ely was able to get on base off of an error by RSU, but it didn't lead to a run. In the bottom of the second, the Hillcats got three hits, including a three-run home run to right field, and an additional run to take a 4-1 after two innings played. Koppel got his first strikeout of the game. Only the Hillcats were able to get runners on base and a single hit in the third inning, but neither team was able to score. In the bottom of the third, Aleks struck out his second batter looking.

In the fourth inning, RSU was able to get a batter on base with a single to third base but Newman's defense made an effort to stop him. Hunter Brown got on base with a bunt in the top of the fourth. Then, Eli Wohl earned a walk to put the second Jet runner on base. But RSU denied them from scoring. In the bottom of the fifth, Koppel got his third strikeout of the game to record the second out, and got the third out by grabbing a ground ball and throwing it to first. Kobuszewski earned a walk in the first Jet at bat of the sixth inning. Then, Pierson Gunnell and Jack Kiser hit a single to load the bases for Newman. Nick Ely continued the Jets momentum hitting a single that scored Kobuszewski. After an RSU pitching change, the Jets scored two more runs off of a walk from Louis Coca and a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Brown to tie the game. Eli Wohl earned a walk before the Hillcats defense recorded the third out. Caden Poor entered the game in the bottom of the sixth to pitch for Koppel. He struck out a batter, but the Hillcats were able to get the go ahead run with a walk and a single. Kobuszewski walked again to start the top half of the inning for Newman. Then, Trammell's single advanced Micah to third. Recently entered Thomas Munn doubled to left field to score Micah's tying run. The go ahead run came from Trammell who was batted in by Kiser's double to right field. After another pitching change by the Hillcats, Nick Ely was hit by the new pitcher. Then, Coca's ground out scored Munn. A wild pitch scored Jack Kiser and Newman ended the top of the seventh leading 8-5. Colby Wilson got on the mound for Newman in the bottom of the seventh and helped the defense record the first two out. Then, he retired the third out with a swinging strikeout.

Blake Mitchell, Trammell, and Munn earned a walk to start the eighth inning. Kiser's single scored Trammell for Newman's 9th run of the game. After Kiser stole second, a walk by Ely loaded the bases for the Jets. Another walk earned by Coca scored Munn. The top of the eighth ended with the Jets leading 10-5. Wilson got two consecutive strikeouts to end the eighth inning and bring the Jets bats back out. Micah earned his fourth walk of the day and another single by Trammell put him at third base, once again. A wild pitch scored Kobuszewski for his fourth personal run and the eleventh for Newman. In the bottom of the ninth, the Hillcats got a home run in the bottom of the ninth, but it was meaningless as the Jets defense, led by Wilson, recorded three consecutive outs to end the game.
