Tigers take series from Jets with doubleheader win

Jets fall 8-0, 12-6

WICHITA- Baseball faced Fort Hays State in a Friday doubleheader. The Jets took game one yesterday with a final score of 15-9 where the Jets hit four total home runs on the day. In game two, the Tigers took the win at 8-0. The Tigers took the series with a game three win, 12-6. 

Game Two: NU 0, FHSU 8
- The Tigers took an early lead after a solo home run in the first at bat of the game. Another home run in the top of the third inning extended the Tigers lead to 2-0. Both the Jets and Tigers were held scoreless in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, FHSU was next to score, adding four runs to take their lead out to 6-0. The Jets offense continued to be denied any runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Jets defense and Colby Wilson held the Tigers in the top of the sixth to no hits and no runs to keep the deficit at six. The Tigers were able to get their bats rolling in the top of the seventh, adding two more runs to take the score to 8-0. In the bottom of the ninth, the Jets earned two walks to start off the inning. Though the Jets had runners on to try to cut into the Tigers lead, Newman was unable to overcome the deficit. The Tigers would even the series at 1-1 with a game two win at 8-0. 

Player Notes:
- Micah Kobuszewski tallied two hits of four at bats. 
- The Jets earned six total walks.

Game Three: NU 6, FHSU 12
- The Jets were first to score in game two with a Nick Chasey solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Fort Hays State was able to tie the game up in the top of the third with three hits. The Jets regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Hunter Brown led off the inning with a single. Brown then stole second and later advanced on a wild pitch. Brown would later score with a sacrifice fly by Eli Wohl. This score would give Newman the 2-1 lead. The Tigers had a big fourth inning, recording four runs off of three hits and one error by the Jets defense. With those four runs, the Tigers took the 5-2 lead. Louis Coca led the Jets off in the fourth inning with a walk. Coca's walk was followed by a Nicolas Ely single to put runners on first and second. Chasey then connected with his second home run of the game, a three-run home run, to tie the game at five all. The Jets regained the advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Ely led off the inning with a double to center. Later, Brown singled that scored Ely. This score gave the Jets a 6-5 lead with three innings to play. The Tigers took back the lead in the top of the seventh where they scored six runs to take the 11-6 lead. The Jets were held scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. FHSU was next to score, adding one more run in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to six runs at 12-6. The Tigers closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth to take the series. The Jets fell, 12-6 in game three. 

Player Notes:
- Chasey hit two home runs with four RBIs.
- Wohl and Brown added one RBI apiece. 
- Kobuszewski and Ely both went 2-4 from the plate.

 

The Jets hit the road next weekend to face Washburn in a weekend series.
