TOPEKA, Kan.- The Jets traveled to Topeka for a three game series against the Ichabods. In game one, the Jets fell short 8-2.
How it Happened:
The Jets and Ichabods held each other to one hit a piece in the first inning, holding both teams at zeros on the board. The Jets were first to score, the run coming in the top of the second inning after
Pierson Gunnell hit a solo home run. This put the Jets up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second.
Aleks Koppel and the Jets defense were able to hold the Jets off the board in the second to keep the lead. The Ichabods tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning with two hits that led to their first run. Koppel and the Jets defense continued to hold strong, holding the Ichabods to just one run through four innings. Koppel allowed a total of just four hits through the first four. In the bottom of the fifth, the Ichabods broke the 1-1 tie and batted in six runs in the inning off of four hits. The Ichabods recorded two doubles and a home run to take the lead at 7-1. The Jets chipped into the deficit in the top of the sixth.
Eli Wohl led off the inning with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved Wohl over to second, who later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then, a fielder's choice helped Wohl cross the plate. This put the deficit at 7-2. The Ichabods added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to take their lead back out to six runs, 8-2. The Jets were unable to close the gap in the last few innings. The Ichabods would take game one, 8-2.
Player Notes:
- Wohl went a perfect 3-3 from the plate, scoring once.
- Gunnell hit a solo homerun for an RBI.
