2024-25 MIAA M/W Basketball Academic Awards Announced

11 Jets earn Academic Honors

KANSAS CITY, MO.- The MIAA released its Men's and Women's Basketball Academic Awards on Thursday afternoon. Monica Redondo was the sole Jet to earn Academic Excellence. Sam Somerhalder and Boston Stanton III earned Scholar Athlete status and 11 Jets earned a spot on the Honor Roll. 
 
The prestigious MIAA Academic Excellence Award was achieved by 17 women's basketball athletes; Monica Redondo was the sole Jet to earn this honor. An MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of at least 4.00 at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of grades reported at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The athletes who earned this award are listed below. 

Academic Excellence:

The Scholar-Athlete distinction went to six Men's Basketball athletes. A Scholar-Athlete is an individual that has a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 or better at the certifying member institution. They must have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The student-athlete must also earn All-MIAA honors for the current season. Sam Somerhalder and Boston Stanton III both earned Scholar-Athlete Status after both earning All-MIAA Honorable Mention this season.
 
Somerhalder led the Jets in minutes played this season with 828 total minutes while starting 28 of 28 games. Somerhalder was a key piece in the Jets success this year scoring a total of 281 points, ten points per game. Somherhalder led in multiple stat categories with 6.1 rebounds per game (172 total) and led the team in assists with 85. Somerhalder shot 51% from the field, making 120 total field goals. Somerhalder was selected as the MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for week 12 of play. During this week of play, he totaled 37 points, 18 rebounds, and recorded a league high 12 assists for 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game. Somerhalder finished 10th in the MIAA in rebounding, 8th in field goal percentage, 16th in assists, and 4th in assist/turnover ratio.
 
Stanton III was a huge contributor for the men's team on all cylinders. Stanton III totaled 721 minutes while averaging the second highest minutes per game and starting in all 26 games that he appeared in. Stanton III scored 316 total points while shooting 41% from the field and 38% from behind the arc. Stanton III hit 44 three-pointers, with his season high seven three-pointers made in the win against Emporia State. Stanton III hit his season and career high 30 points in the same game against the Hornets, where he shot 8-16 from the floor for 50% from the field and 63% from behind the arc. Stanton III dished out a total of 58 assists, brought down a total of 93 rebounds, and totaled 31 steals on the season. Stanton III finished 22nd in the MIAA in total scoring, 17th in three-point field goals per game, and 20th in steals.

In the Academic Honor Roll category, 85 Women's Basketball athletes and 55 Men's Basketball athletes were mentioned, 11 Jets earned this honor. To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 or above at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The athletes who have earned this honor are listed below.
