Jets compete game one but drop both in doubleheader at PSU

Pittsburg, Kan. -Baseball traveled to Pittsburg State University to play the Gorillas in a three-game conference series that was scheduled to be played at McCarthy Field originally, but had to be moved to Pittsburg due to inclement weather. In the doubleheader played on Sunday, PSU took both games, 6-4 and 15-4 .

Game 1: NU 4, PSU 6
With Aleks Koppel on the mound, the Gorillas were first to score in the top of the first off of a single and a triple. Then, the Jets went down in order in the bottom half of the inning. In the second inning, Koppel recorded his second strikeout and held off PSU. But the Jets were unable to get on base or score the tying run. A free base and a single scored PSU's second run in the top of the third. After that, Nick Chasey earned a walk to get the first Jet runner on base of the game. Eli Wohl seized the opportunity and batted Chasey in with a double to set the score at 2-1. Koppel struck out the lead off batter in the top of the fourth and helped the defense record two fly outs to end the half inning. In the bottom half, Trent Trammel was the only Jet able to get a hit, but Newman couldn't score him.

PSU doubled their score with two runs in the top of the sixth frame with two singles and a double. Nicolas Ely earned a lead off walk in the bottom half of the inning. Then, he advanced to third on a Gorilla error and scored while PSU recorded a double play. After five, the score was 4-2. In the sixth, both teams went scoreless and Koppel recorded his fifth strike out. Mac Collins substituted Koppel on the mound in the top of the seventh. A walk, a single, and a wild pitch scored PSU's fifth run. Blake Mitchell and Louis Coca hit singles in the bottom of the seventh but the Gorillas were able to record the third out before the Jets could score them. With two outs already recorded in the top of the eighth, Caden Poor entered the game for Collins and struck out a batter to end the offensive inning for PSU. The Jets cut down the lead down by one when Trent Trammell's single scored Hunter Brown, who previously got on base taking a hit by the pitch. The Gorillas scored a home run to set the score at 6-3 in the top of the ninth. Anthony Cannavino entered the game pinch hitting for Pierson Gunnell and doubled in his first at bat. He advanced to third on a ground out and then scored Newman's fourth run off of Louis Coca's single. The fourth went hitless and scoreless for both teams. Three singles, two errors, and a homer helped the Gorillas score six runs in the top of the fifth, regaining the lead. The Jets couldn't answer on the offensive side. Cole Landgraf substituted Wilson, who ended his outing striking out four batters.
