WICHITA -The Jets hosted the No.3 Central Missouri Mules in a doubleheader that started at noon on Friday. Newman attempted a late comeback in the first game, but lost 11-8. Then, the Jets, who led the game through five innings played, dropped the second game 17-12.
Game 1: NU 8, UCM 11
Colby Wilson started on the mound for the Jets for the last time in his collegiate career. He went on to deny the Mules any hits or runs in the opening half inning.
Eli Wohl was able to get a single in his first at bat, but the Jets couldn't score him. In the top of the second frame, UCM scored the first run of the game from a home run, and added another hit with a well placed bunt. Newman couldn't answer in the bottom half of the inning. The Mules stretched their lead by one with another homer to right field in the third inning, and the Jets couldn't answer with any hits or runs. In the fourth, a double and a single scored the third run for the Mules. But this time, the Jets responded.
Jack Kiser and
Thomas Munn earned walks and scored from
Hunter Brown's single to right field. With the pressure on UCM, the Mules were only able to get a hit in the top of the fifth, giving the Jets a chance to at least tie the game. And they did. A homer run by
Eli Wohl tied the game at 3-3 through five innings played. A double and a single gave Central Missouri the lead again in the sixth. A third UCM home run forced
Gavin Wakefield to substitute Wilson on the mound. Then, a single and a double scored the Mules' sixth run. In the eighth inning. UCM scored a run from two walks and a ground out. To which the Jets answered with a run by
Micah Kobuszewski, who got on base with a single and was batted in by
Trent Trammell.
Caden Poor and
Kaden Wright pitched in the final half inning for the Jets. The Mules ended their offensive play scoring four runs off of two doubles, four walks, and a wild pitch. Brown reached first on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth. Then, a single by
Nick Chasey and a sacrifice fly by Wohl scored Brown. After that, Kobuszewski hit a single and
Blake Mitchell and Trammell hit two consecutive doubles to score three more runs and leave a final 11-8 score.
Player Notes:
-Wohl went 2-3 from the plate, added a run, batted two in, and hit a homer.
-Mitchell and Trammell combined for four RBIs and three doubles.
Game 2: NU 12, UCM 17
Gio De Graauw was the starting pitcher for Newman and struck out two batters in the first half inning. But the Mules were able to get an early lead, scoring two runs off of an error and a single. In the second, De Graauw retired two more batters striking out, but another error and a home run gave UCM a five run lead. Kobuszewski hit a lead off single in the bottom of the second and was later scored by a double from
Blake Mitchell. A sacrifice bunt from Kiser and a single by Nick Ely brought Mitchell home for the Jets' second run. Finally, a double by Wohl scored two more Jets to leave the score at 5-4 in favor of the Mules through two innings played. Newman continued their momentum on the third, turning away the Mules with no hits or runs, and hitting back to back singles in the bottom half of the inning. Then, an error, a walk by
Pierson Gunnell, and a single from Ely scored three runs for Newman who, for the first time in the series, led the Mules. Trailing by two, the Mules earned three free bases and hit a single to score two runs and tie the game again.
Kellen Curtis came in the game for De Graauw to face the last Mule batter of the fourth. Three Jets got singles in the bottom half of the frame, but no one scored. In the fifth, two free bases and a single scored the leading run for the Mules. A walk after that forced the Jets to call
Alex Gillig out of the bullpen. Trailing by two, the Jets earned two bases wearing the hit by the pitcher. Then, another double by Wohl and a single by Chasey gave the Jets the lead once again. In the top of the sixth, the Mules showcased their offensive power and scored five runs off of four hits. To which the Jets only were able to answer with hits by Mitchell and Kiser, but with no runs. In the seventh, and with
Jared Newton pitching for Newman, a single, a double, and a sacrifice fly added two more runs to the Mules tally.
Mac Collins pitched fo the Jets in the eighth and only allowed two hits. The Jets loaded the bases multiple times in the bottom half of the eighth but were only able to score once. In the final inning, the Jets added one run to leave a final 17-12 score. With the win, the Mules clinched the number one seed in the MIAA tournament, and the regular season title.
