Drew Maus to step away after six seasons leading Newman Baseball

Maus led the baseball program since the 2020 season

5/9/2025 10:16:00 AM

WICHITADrew Maus announced his resignation from his position as Newman Baseball's Head Coach on Thursday.

Maus will depart Newman after spending six years as the Head Baseball Coach. Maus originally  joined the Jet family August 5th, 2019 with 2020 being his first season.

In the 2025 season, Maus led the Jets to a 10-36 overall record. Under Maus, Five Jets earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention including; Gio De Graauw, Trent Trammell, Eli Wohl, Micah Kobuszewski, and Blake Mitchell. This was Mitchell's second year in a row earning All-MIAA Honorable Mention.

"We thank Coach Maus for his time leading our baseball program," said Interim Athletic Director Billy Murphy. "He has done a wonderful job being a mentor to our athletes over the years."

In the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the Jets put back to back 23 wins seasons together. The Jets secured 14 conference wins in the 2023 season, the most in the Newman-MIAA era. This punched the Jets ticket to their first ever MIAA Tournament appearance and first postseason tournament appearance since 2014. In the tournament, Newman took down No. 13 Missouri Southern in game two of the MIAA opening round. Steele was named MIAA Player of the Year and the first Jet in any sport to earn that title. Alongside Steele, Jake Angelico, Zack Stewart, and Jason Schneider all earned All-MIAA honors in the 2023 season. Jake Angelico, Garrett VanDeventer, and Steele earned MIAA Athlete of the Week awards during the season, which was the first time any Jet has earned this honor. The 23 wins in the 2022 season was Maus's best season since taking over the program. During the 2022 season, Tyler Push, Asher Finke, Connor Langrell and Steele all earned postseason honors.

Push, Hayden VanDePol, and Devin Beard all earned All-MIAA nods in the 2021 season.

Maus's first season was cut short due to covid cancelling most of the 2020 season. Maus will leave Newman with an overall record of 87-162.

Through the years under Maus, many Newman Baseball records were broken. In 2023, the Jets offense broke nine records including RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, at bats, hits, walks, runs, on base percentage, and home runs. In the same season, Steele broke several individual records including: total bases (career and season), slugging percentage (career and season), homeruns (career and season), at bats, hits, and RBIs. On the defensive side, two records were broken: putouts and strikeouts. Angelico broke the season runs scored in the 2023 season.

Push added a few broken records to his resume in the 2022 season: season and career triples, season and career stolen bases. In the same season, Lincoln Choate broke the record for base on balls.

"I want to thank the players and their families for their time and effort over the past six years, said Maus. "Without them, we would not have been able to accomplish what we did, on and off the field."

Off the field Maus spearheaded numerous projects including the Make Newman Beautiful campaign that entailed baseball student-athletes beautifying areas of campus with landscaping. Newman's baseball players are often found passing along their knowledge of the game to the next generation as Newman hosted an annual League 42 Instructional Camp.

The baseball program was a family during the past six seasons. Maus welcomed players into his home for weekly dinners during the fall with his wife, Katy, and sons Reece and Dean. The fall season would then culminate with a family weekend which welcomed back all members of the Newman Baseball family which included current players and their families as well as alums and friends of the program. Intrasquad games and an annual golf outing were the biggest annual draws to the event.

McCarthy Field saw some much needed improvements in the first half of the 2020's. From a new scoreboard, to regrading infield lips, to a new sheet metal fence facade, the ballpark has enjoyed major on field enhancements. In 2025, dugout areas were expanded, the natural surface saw the return of dirt base paths home to first and third to home, while the area behind home plate was turfed to allow for better drainage and a more playable natural surface.

A key driver of Newman Baseball's push into the future was honoring the past. In January 2025, the baseball program held its first annual First Pitch Banquet. On January 18, Matt Sexton, Sam Biedron, Ron Douglas and Rick McNerlin were named to baseball's Ring of Honor. Accompanying them that night were Newman Baseball's Hall of Famers Paul Sanagorski, Chris Clawson, and Kelly Gaul. Read more here.

"My goal when I took this job was to leave it better than I found it," said Maus. "I think with the field upgrades, team / alumni events we implemented, team GPA over the years and the type of kids we had, we succeeded."
