TOPEKA, Kan. - The Jets traveled to Topeka for the Washburn Invitational. On day one of play, the Jets faced Emporia State and William Jewell. The Jets fell to MIAA opponent Emporia State, 3-0. In the late game, the Jets took down familiar foe William Jewell, 3-1.
Game one vs Emporia State:
Emporia State opened strong, jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first set. A kill from Sky Miller tried to spark the Jets, but the Hornets continued to pull away, stretching the margin to 20-10 before closing out the set, 25-10.
Newman responded in set two with renewed energy. Back-to-back kills from Hannah Tymitz and an ace by Brooklyn Lane gave the Jets an 8-7 lead, which they extended to 10-7 after two Hornet errors. ESU battled back with a 5-3 run to tie things at 12-12. The teams would then trade points down the stretch. With the score knotted at 22-22, the Hornets put together a 4-1 run to secure the set at 25-22.Â
Set three saw ESU grab an early edge, 8-4. Newman answered with a 4-1 run, highlighted by kills from Tymitz and Isabella Lamb, along with another ace from Lane to even the score at 8-8. The Hornets countered with their own 4-1 stretch to go up 13-9. The Hornets did not allow the Jets to climb back into the set, taking the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Game two vs William Jewell:

William Jewell came out strong in the opening set, jumping ahead 4-0 before an Isabella Lamb kill put Newman on the board. The Cardinals stretched their lead to 8-2, but the Jets answered with a run of their own to cut the deficit to 10-8. Back-to-back kills from Josie Weers tied the score at 15-15, and a block from Lamb and Sky Miller gave Newman its first lead. The Jets carried the momentum to the finish, with Madalyn Hoot delivering the set-winning kill for a 25-23 victory.
Set two opened with a pair of kills from Weers to put Newman in front. The teams traded points throughout, staying close down the stretch. The Jets held a late lead before William Jewell rallied to even things at 23-23. Two straight kills from the Cardinals closed out the set, 25-23.
In set three, the teams continued to battle evenly before back-to-back kills from Avery Kelley pushed the Jets ahead 12-8. The Cardinals fought back to tie the score at 20-20, but Newman responded with an attack error from WJC and a Lamb kill to reclaim control. The Jets then closed on a 5-0 run, taking the set 25-20.
Newman carried that momentum into the fourth, grabbing a 4-1 lead early. The Cardinals edged back in front 7-6, but a Weers kill quickly evened the score. Neither side could create separation until Lamb broke a 20-20 tie with a kill, followed by a Miller ace to force a WJC timeout. The Jets secured three of the final four points, with a Lamb kill and a Cardinal error sealing the 25-22 win and the 3-1 match victory.
