Jets Battle Through Day Two of Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. -The Jets wrapped up day two of the Washburn Invitational with a pair of tough matchups, first against No. 12 Washburn and later against GLVC opponent Truman State. Newman dropped the morning match to the nationally ranked Ichabods, 3-0, before battling in the afternoon and falling to Truman State in four sets, 3-1.

Game one vs Washburn:
The Ichabods started strong, jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the opening set. Josie Weers and Hannah Tymitz each recorded a kill to spark the Jets' offense, but Washburn's hitters proved to be the difference as they took the set, 25-10.

The Jets showed fight early in the second set, with a kill from Sky Miller tying things up. Washburn maintained its offensive rhythm to build a lead, though Newman put together a three-point run to cut the deficit to seven. Miller added to her strong weekend with five kills in the frame, but the Ichabods held on to win the set, 25-16.

Set three saw the Jets continue to battle. Olivia Anderson-Stewart delivered an ace to even the score at four. Later on, a Madalyn Hoot ace followed by a Tymitz block brought Newman within three. Nicole Soto added a block to trim the deficit to 20-16, but Washburn's offense closed out the set and the match. The Ichabods finished with a .367 hitting percentage overall.


Player Notes:

-Hannah Tymitz recorded 8 kills.

-Sky Miller finished with 7 kills.


Game two vs Truman:
The Jets and Truman went back and forth early, with kills from Josie Weers and Sky Miller keeping the Jets in front 9-6. The Bulldogs responded with a run to even the score before the Jets regained the lead behind kills from Hannah Tymitz and Isabella Lamb to go up 18-16. Truman answered with back-to-back aces as part of a late surge, pulling away to take the opening set, 25-21.
Truman opened the second set strong, using a string of kills and aces to build a 12-4 lead. The Jets got points from Weers and Miller, along with a Tymitz kill midway through the frame, but the Bulldogs continued to stretch their advantage. Truman closed on a 5-0 run to take the set decisively, 25-10.

The Jets came out strong in the third set, taking an early 7-3 lead with a kill from Josie Weers and an ace from Brooklyn Lane. The Jets extended their advantage to 15-9 after a kill from Lamb and a block by Lamb and Hoot. Weers added another key kill later in the frame to keep the momentum with the Jets. Truman battled to cut the deficit to 20-16, but the Jets answered with a late push. Lamb and Weers continued to contribute offensively, while Lane added another ace before Newman closed out the set, 25-19.

Truman came out strong in the fourth, using an early 6-1 run to set the tone. The Jets battled back with kills from Isabella Lamb and Josie Weers, along with an ace from Brooklyn Lane, to trim the deficit to 10-7. Truman responded with another surge, stretching its lead to 15-8. The Jets put together a late push behind a kill and ace from Hannah Tymitz and a pair of swings from Sky Miller to close within 21-15. However, the Bulldogs closed the door with a 4-2 run, taking the set 25-17 and securing the match, 3-1.


Player Notes:

-Madalyn Hoot recorded 32 assists.

-Isabella Lamb led with 12 kills.

-Brooklyn Lane finished with 17 digs.


The Jets will be back in action next weekend at the MIAA/GAC crossover in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
